I will be moving to the DC area for good next summer, so I plan on getting signed up on one of the *A FF plans once there. Im not sure where I will be living in the area yet, so IAD vs BWI vs DCA as most convenient geographically is still up in the air, but I tend to like DCA because of the Metro and proximity to DC itself. So, what this means, at least as I see it, is that I will be flying a lot on US out of DCA (especially with the new slots they're getting from DL) for the shorter stuff and then heading out to IAD to take UA metal to the West Coast or interntionally. I don't necessarily have a preference for either airline in terms of service, but will I be able to earn miles in one or the other's plan even when booking flights with the other airline (e.g., if I go UA Mileaage Plus, and book flights out of DCA on US that are not codeshared according to UA.com, will I still be able to earn Mileage Plus credit by entering that number in lieu of a Dividend Miles acct number)?

I have found spotty success with going back into the record and adding it, though when I call SA)">UA or add it at a check in kiosk it always works and the miles credit quickly to my Dividend Miles account.
I am a preferred member with US and find that when traveling SA)">UA I will periodically be given E+ at no cost (though by an agent, not the kiosk). I also appreciate the Zone 2 boarding when flying SA)">UA. The upgrades on US are quite consistent for me (even as a silver), though it might be the routes I frequent.
My one word of advice is that if you choose the US program, watch your SA)">UA boarding passes (mostly on connections). I have had a few situations where the second segment didn't reflect my ff number (and thus no earlier boarding, etc). Going to a SA)">UA kiosk and re-entering or asking an agent to fix it has always taken care of it (and it does not happen often).
I have also earned miles on other *A members (SA most recently) using my US ff account without any trouble.
Have fun living in the DC Metro Area - I know I miss it.

Zone 2 is Window Seats, has nothing to do with MP Status.
And yes, even if the flight is not codeshared, you can earn FF miles on US if you have a United number, and vice versa.
