JFK/EWR To MSP In Winter?

Hi, I'll be flying NYC to Minneapolis around the 20th of December and wanted some help with making some choices:

Option 1
CO
EWR-MSP
Embraer RJ135/145

Option 2
NW
JFK-MSP
A319

I'll be flying into EWR on SQ the night before and will stay at the airport hotel. My questions are:

1) Which airport is better to fly out of in winter, in terms of delays, etc
2) Which airline has a better on-time record in winter?
3) Is the A319 a safer option? Will it have less delay times?
4) Is expressjet (CO) safe? I know it is pretty safe but I'm worried about flying an RJ in winter.
5) Getting from EWR to JFK is $75 - is it worth making the transfer?

The fare difference is minimal, so I'm open to any option. I just want to pick the safest way Wink Let me know what you guys think ASAP Smile

Hello ManekS,

I would recommend going with CO Express Jet. I have flown them several times out of EWR in the middle of the winter and had absolutely no concerns and only delays on par with the EWR clogging.
Plus you will stay within the Star alliance too.

I have also stayed overnight at an EWR hotel. The Hilton there was fantastic!

Here are some things to think about.

1. Much more room on the A319

2. NW has more options to get you to MSP

3. In case of bad weather, RJ flights are typically the first to cancel or most likely too

4. The ERJ is tiny and thats a long flight

5. NW also has a few flights EWR-MSP daily

6. NW's ontime record year around is typically considerably higher than Express jets

7. Both airlines are safe, they are US carriers no worries.

8. Yes in winter... in case of bad weather the A319 is more likely to get you there due to CAT etc.

9. Check NW out of EWR.

Avoid the ERJ-145 - that plane has no business doing a 3 hour flight - simply too small and uncomfortable for a flight of that length.

EWR to JFK can be done for about $20 - there are buses that run every hour or so between EWR and JFK, and there's also the train option. It took me 75 minutes last week to go from EWR Terminal B to JFK Terminal 4 via NJ Transit/LIRR. Cost was $23.75.

Take a look at NW out of EWR though. NW does use some E-175s on this route (I've taken MSP-EWR twice in the past 10 days on this plane) and it was pretty comfortable.

Safety should not be an issue of concern at all - I'd have no hesitation stepping on board any ExpressJet or Northwest flight. Both are equal I'd say - and equal only because there are no issues with either one. On a flight this long, go for comfort.

Just checked NW out of EWR and its perfect in terms of convenience and price - best of both worlds :P They'll be operated by the E-175, so I'll have some breathing space crowded

If you're staying the night at EWR, I would definitely not try to fly out of JFK - much more hassle than it's worth. NW out of EWR seems to be a good bet.

MSP is a pretty delay-prone airport at the moment due to construction on one of their runways, but that should be over by the time winter really rolls around.

Runway construction is due to end at the end of this month, so any winter issues should be fine.

To be honest, I haven't really felt the pain of the runway being out - longer taxis for the most part, but that's about it. Meanwhile, I've been fortunate to be treated to some amazing views of downtown Mpls on the approach to Runway 17.

I wouldn't doubt it...I'm just saying that as a passenger that has been doing 2 round-trips a week out of MSP over the past month, I haven't noticed anything crazy. Longer waits, yes...it might take an extra 10 minutes to take off now, but it's more akin to something like Atlanta/New York/O'Hare.

Not if you're lucky enough to get the 1 side of the 1x2 on the ERJ. I'm 6'4, yet I'll happily take an ERJ-135/140/145 over most other aircraft if any seats are available on the 1 side.

Legroom-wise, the A seats aren't so bad (even 12 B/C on the -145s aren't bad). It's more of an issue of the seat cushions - they get rather uncomfortable after 90 minutes or so.

Really not looking forward to doing MSP-IAH and IAH-MSP on the same day in a week on E-145s (no mainline into MSP on that day on Continental...)
