Out of curiosity, I was wondering what other people's opinions were on this subject: would you prefer to sit in a cloth or a leather seat on a long haul flight? My personal preference would be to sit in leather on a short haul/regional flight, and on anything longer I prefer cloth, because in my opinion it is more comfortable. Thanks!

Never tried leather seats, but the perforated leather in SQ's new J class looks supremely comfortable, but for the too-wide seats. It depends on the quality of the leather, though. The not so good leathers tend to get hot and sweaty, while good quality ones should remain relatively comfortable for a long flight in an air-conditioned cabin.
Just to throw a spanner in the works, how about velour?

Quoting YYZRWY23 (Reply 1): definitely think cloth is more comfortable for a long-haul flight, at least in Y.
I think that airlines are maybe trying to seem to be nicer by installing leather seats but.....I would honestly love it if they maybe just replaced cloth with new cloth!

It must be all the talk about H1N1 lately, but suddenly I realized that disinfecting leather would be much easier than cloth unless it's removed and washed.
Notwithstanding the above, I prefer leather seats with one caveat: being on the small side I often slide off the leather seat unless there is a foot rest. On cloth seats I have uncomfortable pressure at the back of my knee, but no sliding down.
Curiosity killed that cat. I still have some lives left.

Funny, last month I flew Northwest 40/39 DTW-AMS. The 333 to AMS had leather and was in DL colors. The trip back to the US was still in cloth and Red Tail. I preferred the look of the cloth seats but, as far as comfort goes, I made more of an impression on the seats than they made on me. Neither seemed better or worse than the other.

I have a question to add to the leather vs cloth discussion. Is the " leather" used on airline seats actually 100% leather? If so from what animal? I know that "leather" seats in cars, is not real leather, so how about aircraft seats that claim to be leather.

I've never encountered vinyl seats on any major airlines. In cars, you often see leather seats advertisied with the qualification that the "seating surfaces" are leather. That normallly means that the actual seat bottom and seat back surfaces you come in contact with are real leather, but the backs and sides of the seats may be vinyl. That's also true for a lot of furniture where only the seating surfaces are leather and the rest vinyl.
.If a car or furniture manufacturer advertised that their seats/sofas/chairs etc. were leather when in fact parts of the seats were vinyl or other material, they would run into problems with truth-in-advertising laws.

You raise a good point, a friend of mine gave me a new (at the time) set of TWA seats with fabric slip covers. The fabric I was able to dry clean and launder however the cushions were oil soaked from the passengers hair and head oils...the base cushions were equally stained with puke, coffe and who know what else. I fortunately replaced them with new ones. Retention of swine flu type pathogins would thrive quite well...thanx...now I gotta bring my own seats when I fly!

Actually, it depends on what car you get. Granted some cars use imitation leather, but most top end cars with leather seats are definitely real leather.

I prefer cloth in an airplane, no matter the length of flight. They just seem more inviting to me.
However in a car I prefer leather. Guess I can't make up my mind.

LCCs seem to prefer leather these days, as it's easier to keep clean, which slightly puts me off leather
Actually, I've never been a big leather fan (unless it's high quality leather in a traditional British car in which case it's essential for the ambience) as I find it makes my legs sweat!

I completely agree! I love leather in a car, but I definitely like cloth on any length of flight, even though I don't mind leather on short haul! Thanks!
