Hello a.net,
I am looking into flying down to MIA at the end of January for a week. I was looking around aa.com and found this fare for Business class.
YYZ-MIA-YYZ r/t for $1718.53 CAD all taxes and fees included.
Now, my friends father is a member of AAdvantge. I went on the site and noticed you can buy miles. I noted that for 25,000 AAdvantage Miles, you can book a Busniess/First Miles SAAver fare roundtrip YYZ-MIA-YYZ.
Now, my friends father is obviously not going to drop 25K miles just for me, but I noticed that you can purchase 25,000 AAdvantage Miles for $625.00.
How does this make sense? I can book the exact same flights in the same class of service for 1/3 of the price. Am I missing a condition of the program and purchase of miles or is this a viable option for me?

The flights you want may not be available on miles redemption.
Usually business travellers use the business class fares; and even then they may buy one of the cheaper fares and try and upgrade. So it is unlikely someone will pay $1700 for a ticket for a flight that is in January.
