Hi all,

next long haul trip for me will be a visit to Brazil in April of next year. Got a great deal for a LAN business class ticket and will be flying

AKL - SCL / LA 800
SCL - GRU / LA 754
GRU - SCL / LA 751
SCL - AKL / LA 801

Flights between BNE and AKL will be on QF 115 and QF 116.

This will be my first trip to South America and my first time flying a South American carrier. The number recent LA trip reports is very limited so thought I'd go to this forum to get some of my questions answered so here I go:

1) How is the business class product on LA's A340 and B767 ?
2) How are the lounges in AKL, SCL and GRU ?
3) Does LA have special upgrade fares from economy to business on day of travel ? My wife will join me in Brazil halfway through my business trip and she is booked on same flights in economy. We are flying back together with me in business and her in coach. Does LA charge a specific fixed amount for upgrades at day of travel if seats in business are still available ?
4) Will I be able to take my wife in to the LA lounges in GRU, SCL and AKL even though she is booked in economy ?

As usual, thanks in advance for your replies.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

Hi Peter. I will answer just these two questions I know the answer of.

It is great. On both the A340 and 767 you'll get the same seats (just a bit wider on the A340). The seats go full flat; and the IFE is top notch.

In my experience, the crews are fantastic and meals delicious. I flew LA C on a 767 SCL-LIM-SCL. You can find a TR on the LIM-SCL-PDP part of the journey on the Trip Reports froum.

Get ready for an amazing trip!

2) How are the lounges in AKL, SCL and GRU ?

I don´t know what lounges they use in both GRU and AKL. The Pablo Neruda lounge in SCL is certainly nothing special. It´s in the basement with no views whatsoever of anything.

There are some magazines available, some snacks, and a Business center that will only let you make local calls. There is free internet though.

Regards,

Hi PlunaCRJ,

thanks for your reply. Just had a look at your TR in LA. The product certainly looks good and I am certainly looking forward to flying on an A343 again. Hope there is someone out there who can answer my other questions.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

I just flew on the A340 from AKL-SYD on Monday.

The seats on the A340 go almost flat.

Big version: Width: 490 Height: 367 File size: 68kb
LAN Airlines business Class

Big version: Width: 490 Height: 367 File size: 75kb
Lan Airlines business class 2nd cabin

The food was good well the breakfast I ate, the IFE was good nice big screen on the A340 and a stack of movies, music and a bunch of other stuff that I never even looked at.

In Auckland Lan uses the Qantas International Business Lounge; if you are a Qantas Platinum then you can use the Qantas International First Lounge.

Why fly non stop when you can connect

Hi Peter,

1) Its excellent - arguably the best in the Americas (North or South). The seats are good, but the food, wine, service and IFE are excellent. They don't have the newest 767s and A340s, but all have been completely refurbished within the past 3 years.
2)Not sure about AKL (I know its a QF lounge), but SCL has two lounges (Mistral and Neruda). Mistral was just renovated this year, and the food and wine selection is very good. They are not far from each other, so if the first one you go to is very busy (usually around 6-7PM) or don't like the set-up you can go to the other. They have showers too. At GRU they don't have a lounge, but you'll have access to the AA Admiral's club, which is quite mediocre, old and with barely anything that can be considered food.
3)They do, but the upgrade pricing depends on the inventory they have available and the route.
4)Yes, as long as she's on your same outgoing flight. It does not matter what category.

Hi BNE & OP3000,

thanks a lot for the pictures and valuable information. Really looking forward to my first trip to South America. Have made a couple of domestic bookings with G3 in Brazil and have to say I am really impressed with their customer service. Had to change booked flights as my wife suddenly decided that she wants to go to Florianopolis instead of Recife. Took me about 5 minutes on the phone with a GOL Rep. and the flights were changed without any fee and partial refund has already been credited to my CC. Wish other airlines would haver such brilliant customer service.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

FLN has it all, so I don't think you'll regret going there one bit. G3 is a good coice - very efficient operation as LA is, but more customer-friendly in their policies and attitude.

Good luck on the trip!

Certainly looks like a wonderful island. We'll be staying at the Costao do Santinho Resort & Spa and just relax before heading back to Oz.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

They don't have the newest 767s

In fact they do. 13 of LA's passenger 763s are less than 3 years old, and their most recent 763 (photo below) is the newest 767 of all, less than a month old, delivered November 19, 2009. Apart from JL and NH, LA is the only airline that has taken delivery of new passenger 763s in the past 2 years.

You're right on that, but that's out of 24-25 total passenger B763s. There's a wide range of ages with the newest being used mainly on long-haul routes (MIA, JFK, MAD, LAX). The average age is about 8 years and 9 years for the A340s, IIRC. They've been disposing of some of the older ones in the last few years, and more importantly all now have retrofitted interiors, which include AVOD in coach.
