Mileage Upgrade = No Mileage?

I have a question. I am traveling from PER to OSL via BKK with Thai Airways tomorrow. I was thinking of trying at the airport in BKK to spend my miles to upgrade to business class.

If I get an upgrade, do I still earn miles for that trip. If so, is it economy miles (that would be my guess), or business class miles? For me, the miles are more important than the upgrade, as the miles would get me star gold.

Lastly, if I could upgrade and still get miles, could I use miles from the TG account, and have my miles credited to my TK account. It's with TK I can get gold, but its with TG that I have sufficient miles for an upgrade.

Thanks.

It will depend on the Ts & Cs of the TK FF program. However, the FF programs I am familiar with do not credit reward usage as new miles, which would in effect be perpetually recirculating the same miles (and building up an enormous ever-increasing debt for the airline/program). When I upgrade using either upgrade certificates or miles, there's usually a note on the webpage stating that I will only be credited miles based on the original (paid) fare.

So are you saying, that you get credited miles on your base fare, even if you upgrade to a higher class? That would be great, my fear was not receiving any miles at all.

Does anyone have an answer for the second part of the question? Could I upgrade using one program, and still have my miles credited to another program.

That's my experience with other programs, but TK may have specific Ts&Cs.

You should be able to use your miles to upgrade - the software has the ability to enter two programs, one to accrue, one for other things (such as benefits as lounge access). Not all staff knows this should you may struggle.

For sake of ease, you need to tell them you want to upgrade with miles (i.e. use your TG account), once you have your upgrade then you need to tell them you wish to switch mileage accrual, which, as you say will be for your original fare class, and use the TK mileage number. When you get your boarding pass ensure that it is not showing your TG number - if it does, you will accrue in your TG account - if so, find a different agent.

But it should and does work.

Just wanted to say, it went better than I thought it would.

The agent in BKK had no trouble at all using my miles from TG and accruing them to TK. Even though his English wasn't the best, it all went very smoothly.

The best thing though was that I accrued business class miles to my TK account, even though I used TG miles to upgrade from Y class to C class.

BTW, the upgrade was worth it, and the TG business class service was exceptional (better than SQ, although the seat was not as good, but still good).
