At the advice of all the A.nutters that helped me, I have decided not to go into the city during my 3 hour layover. So what can I do in YYC for three hours. I am coming from LAX so I will clear Canadian customs there before proceeding to Vancouver.
I'm thinking to go out to the pre-security because there seems to be some cool stores there. Is it true that YYC has an aviation store? I also might contact Tourism Calgary to see if my dad and I could get a white hat ceremony.
My dad really wants to see some mountains. Will it be possible to see the Canadian Rockies from YYC? Will it also be possible to see them as we fly over? I'm coming in LAX-YYC and leaving YYC-YVR.

Well, there are plenty of shops pre-security, including a good food court on the mezzanine with a nice view of the apron between Piers A and B. "The Spaceport" has a few interesting displays too, though it is more kid-oriented (there are a couple of simulators that you might have to pay to use, and there's a DHC-2 Beaver that you can take a look inside)
You can definitely see the Rockies from YYC, on the ground and in the air. I've never flown over them, but I would imagine that the view will be spectacular on your way to YVR (if the weather is in your favour)
I'm not sure if there is an aviation store, but there is a hobby shop pre-security that has a decent aviation section (there's one in the WS pier, not sure about AC's end.
Radial engines don't leak oil, they are just marking their territory!

I'm not sure how much time you'll have - you'll have to clear Cdn Customs in YYC (Can be 5 minutes or an hour) - the preclear thing only works from Canada to the US, all the Cdn customs are done at the Cdn airports. (Having US customs at maybe 12 Cdn airports opens travel to perhaps 100 US airports, which makes it easier all around - but it would not be possible to put Cdn customs in those same 100 airports).
Since you'll be clearing customs anyway, you'll already be groundside - I don't think there is a 'secure' route from customs to the deperture area (of course since I live near YYC, it's not often that I transfer here!!!!).
Years ago there was a pilot shop at the airport - no more though.
Mountains 80km away are easily visible from the AC terminal on clear days, less so from the International or WS wings.
If it's clear, be sure to get the window seat, as the Rockies are very spectacular from the air, and you should see them over Montana and Ab fromLAX, and you'll be right over the National Parks climbing out of YYC.
