Hey everyone.
I was hoping to get some advice on a trip I am going to take to Tokyo in April. Here are my options for an Economy ticket from LAX.
UA - Non-stop 744 $783
DL - Non-stop to NRT on 744, then NRT - PDX (763) and PDX-LAX (738) $790
SQ - Non-stop 744 $871
DL - Non-stop 744 $883
The reason the DL flights are there is because that is the frequent flyer program that I have accrued miles with and it would be nice to put 11 grand in the pot. But if it isn't a good experience, then I might not go with it.
My questions are these:
1) Does United's 744s now have AVOD? I read in the forums that they were to be upgraded
2) Does Delta/NW's 744s on this route still only have overhead video?
3) What is DLs 763 like?
3) Is SQ's 744 on the LAX-NRT-LAX route one of the "select" 744s that the website mentions? One with AVOD and new economy class?
Any other comments on any of these planes/carriers/routes would be greatly appreciated.

No AVOD. Only overhead monitors in Y class. A fantastic seat with AVOD in business class however

Not sure. I've been on this flight enroute to SIN but in business class, however SQ is in the fast process of retiring its 744s, so I'm not to confident this flight will remain a 744. Might verywell be a 773ER by the time the date rolls around.
Also any reason why AA, JL and NH are not on your list? Of the bunch I would highly recommend ANA even in Y class. Brand new 773ERs with quite a good onboard product offering.

I need to fly on a cheap flight in order to take the trip and the tickets on AA, JL, and NH are too expensive. Looks like I may be out of luck on getting AVOD in Y on any of these flights. If that's the case, then I might just go with DL to get the miles.

Quoting TheS3COND (Reply 2): Anyone know about DL's 763s or NW/DL 744s?
I do believe that the 763's have AVOD, if not, most of them do, but the 744's don't. Someone with better knowledge may be able to help you further.

The 747 will always be the TRUE queen of the skies!

Here's another option. I found $765 R/T on Korean Air from LAX-NRT in April. However, it does require a layover in ICN, so if you don't mind grabbing some kim chi and rice in ICN, then why not. Service is wonderful, great food in Y, and they do have a great IFE system, AVOD or not, as if you were going on Delta's or UA's 744, which they have no personal IFE. Since KE is SkyTeam, you will get your miles with them. Korean flies the 747-400 from LAX-ICN/ICN-LAX and the 777-300 on the ICN-NRT-ICN route and a wonderful thing is that you can book it on delta.com. I also checked JL and ANA, and they wanted $3,000-$6,000 R/T, unless you can afford it, Mr. Lawyer, it better be in F class, am I correct?

All DL/NW 744s in economy have the old-style projection video against the central galley bulkhead. Old overhead CRTs fill the gap for the seats immediately to the side of the middle galley. And the economy cabin will likely show its age. It doesn't add up in DL/NW's favor. The likely upgrades for the 744 are long overdue. Awesome plane, disappointing product.
I would go for SQ if their planes have a better product, or UA if they do not.

KE sounds great. My dates are pretty fixed and what I can end up doing is flying KE to NRT through ICN on the way there and DL NRT-LAX on the way back. For some reason doing it this way is cheaper than just a KE round-trip flight.

Right now on Delta.com they are showing LAX-ICN as a 777-300ER and ICN-NRT on a 777-300. On KE's website, they are showing that LAX-ICN is serviced by one of their new planes: KE12
Now what I have to decide is if I would rather fly KE with a layover at ICN of four hours and a total flying time of 19hrs or just take DL or UA who are both offering non-stops there and back. Sounds like there is no comparison as far as the quality of service between KE and DL/UA and I could get miles so maybe I will just take the better carrier and deal with the layover.

I would personally rather fly the 777-300 then a 747-400 anyday. The 773 service from Dulles to Tokyo on All Nippon was superb. Cheers!

Quoting QANTAS077 (Reply 10): get on the UA website too and book a codeshare flight operated by ANA.
Tried it, however they want twice as much as LAX-NRT on UA. Quite funny actually.
Quoting QANTAS077 (Reply 10): was probably better than my J class service on UA the same day...
Of course, with everyone on the ANA flight chose to get on the United's IAD-NRT service, it was quite nice only having less then 50 passengers on board our 777-300ER. But you had a connection, so you had to go for it. When ya coming back to Tokyo, Mont?

I'm quite certain that KE actually do have a route that does LAX-NRT-ICN you could do this option rather than backtracking to ICN and still do a non-stop to NRT. I think the flight is KE002? Maybe its not coming up in your search cuz its a bit on the pricier side since its the non stop-?
