Hello everyone. I was hoping to get some answers on using my miles to upgrade a planned trip to Thailand from the New York area in November. I am a DL gold member but my traveling partner in not an elite yet. I want to buy a M class fare. So here are my questions.
1. If upgrade seats are not available at the time of booking will we be wait-listed and upgraded with miles automatically, when the seats do become available.
2. Alot of people say "Delta miles are worthless" So should I expect no seats to become available for the upgrade no matter what. ( Then again they say the same about United, American..... and so on!)
3. Will I still get the mileage bonus with the M fare if upgraded. Elite and regular?
4. Does the I fare(discounted business) get you the bonus mileage?

1.) You will be waitlisted and clear if any Z inventory opens up.
2.) Depends on the route. Some are tougher than others. At least Delta has semi-fixed the problem by allowing day of departure international upgrades now, so that if you've requested an upgrade and there is a seat open up front, you will now get the upgrade over a non-rev, as had before unfortunately and wrongly been the case. Delta got it fixed after a lot of Medallion complaining that non-revs were up front too much on international flights while Medallions wanting to use miles/PMUs to upgrade sat in the back.
3/4.) Yes. Extra 50% bonus miles and MQMs based off miles flown. i.e a 4000 mile flight nets you as a GM 4000 base miles, 4000 GM 100% bonus, 2000 M/I fare bonus, and 6000 MQMs.

Quoting Sectflyer (Reply 2): Thanks for the answers! Does that waitlist include my companion as well. We will be on the same ittinnerary. And does status dictate who clears first?
Yup - your companion and you will be together on the waitlist and all that info applies to him. If you're on the same PNR, you will be listed at the status of the lower person (so in this case, it'd be non-elite). Nonetheless, given the difficulties in international upgrades and the prevalence of non-revs sitting up front, it should still clear.
If you have a flight in mind, feel free to PM the details and I can check if there is Z inventory open right now...
