I was just randomly searching - note that I won't be flying this route for I have no need to - for flights from Vancouver to Kamloops (also in BC) using Expedia.ca. If I were to fly this non-stop with WS, the block would be under 50 minutes, with an as-the-crow-flies distance of 140nm. On the selected dates, a one-way fare was CAD$89 including taxes/fees. However, for an additional CAD$41 I could fly via Toronto and Calgary - adding about 10h 30m and 3,373nm!
That's it?!? I will be finding myself in YVR in May and may just take them up on this offer to kill a day. :-P
I think every a.nutter will have the same answer to the proposition of two trans-cons or a single WS flight. Especially when the AC YVR-YYZ could be a 763 or 777. I'm a little more excited for my trip now. $150 to burn off my last day there if I can, why not?

Hey, I did the same thing, only it cost me LESS.
I booked my YYC-BGI trip two days before departure, but I had some option in the matter. It was like that 1970s game show "Let's Make a Deal".
Option one was fly AC YYC-YYZ-BGI for $1,154, and with accommodation in Barbados, a total of $2,800, which was, as the crow flies, 3,500 nautical miles. With a stop in YYZ, a total time of 10h26
Option two was to fly WS YYC-YYZ-BGI for $1,221 and increase my price of the trip to $2,867, same distance, roughly same departure and arrival times for both Canada flights leaving from YYZ. Total flying time on WS was 11h12
Option three (the winner), for $751 r/t, was to fly AA. YYC-DFW-MIA-BGI, make two overnight stops on the way down and back (via Dallas on the way down and Miami on the way back). Total time, including transit stops in DFW and MIA on the way down, was a staggering 30h22 (only 10h was dedicated to actual flying. 11 hours was spent sleeping in Dallas, the other 9 was spent in Miami). Total cost of the trip was just over $2,600, including two hotel stays in DFW and MIA.
Excessive? Sure. Worth it? Definitely! Take the long way around, who knows what adventures await you!

On a smaller scale, I just bought a LGW-PLH-NQY ticket for £40. LGW-PLH was £39, so for £1 more I got an extra flight. OK, because I live next to PLH it means I spend two hours on a bus home instead of a 15 minute walk, but I couldn't resist

I can't imagine anyone wanting to be crammed into an economy class seat for about 10 hours if they don't have to. The only reason I could see doing that would be for a mileage run, but that's not relevant to WS since they don't yet have a frequent flyer program.

I fly ROC-NYC somewhat regularly, and the last time I went I paid an extra $10 to go through DTW. By going through DTW one way, I get 1501 SkyMiles compared to 1000 SkyMiles or 508 US Airways Dividend Miles that I would get for going direct, and a DC-9 . Well, some mx and wx delays, a missed connection, a D95 instead of a D93, an exit row, 10000 bonus miles for going to NYC, a late flight inbound from PHL, 8 more SkyMiles for being rerouted to JFK, N766NC, a few cockpit shots, and a ridiculous 1.5+ hour wait for airstairs and a bus at a full Terminal 4, I ended up walking off a bus at the terminal at 10:45pm, 8 hours and 45 minutes after I was supposed to land at LGA. Oh, and they lost my bag; I got it four days later, along with a total of 6500 SkyMiles and $175 (4x$25 + $75) in compensation. (On the other hand, the direct flight I had on the return, although operated by Comair, was one of the best flights I've had in years.) I'm planning on using the discounts to go through DTW again for spring break. There's a D94 scheduled for one of the LGA legs, but I'll probably book the earlier D93 one as I doubt the -40 is going to stay on that flight (I thought they were only used as subs).
But yeah. Going out of your way can be quite a fun experience!
