Just booked myself onto the new China Airlines service from LHR to TPE, connecting onto SYD. Will be flying on the second service out of LHR, on the 30th March.

What are China Airlines like on long haul services, specifically on their A340-300s and A330-300s? What can one expect in terms of meals and IFE? I'm not particularly looking forward to the 24 hours of flying, or the 4 hour layover in TPE each way, but at £538 return it was almost £300 cheaper than any of the alternatives.

Have never flown them in economy but in business BNE-TPE-FRA return and found them to be of really good value as their business class fares are just as competitive as the fare you paid out of the UK. Found the A333 between BNE and TPE to be in excellent condition. The 744 between TPE-FRA was in good condition as well. Service was fine and I would compare them service wise to KE. Would not hesitate to fly with them again even though TPE is rather boring with not much to do and even the CI lounges were rather ordinary with no tarmac view. Enjoy your trip Down Under.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

Two meals from LHR to TPE.

Light Dinner
Drink Run
Breakfast

Two meals from TPE to SYD (I believe you are on the night flight since connecting time is 4 hours).

Light Dinner
Drink Run
Snack Plate

AVOD is available on both A340-300 and A330-300. They should be able to keep you busy with lots of films and music. No B747-400 surprises like AMS. Newspapers are distributed in Economy prior to boarding at the door. Grab it before it disappears. You may request for some magazines from FAs. There may be minor snacks in between the flights, just need to request them.

Thanks, sounds like I have nothing to worry about then. How is the seat pitch and comfort?

Cheers from Brisbane,

Slightly off topic, we are staying in Gold Coast for a week but flying up to Cairns from Brisbane with Jetstar. Would JQ check in our bags in the morning/early afternoon for an evening flight, allowing us to spend the afternoon in Brisbane?

Pitch on A340-300 is similar to A330-300, but may appear shorter in Economy.

A330-300 seats in AB have more generous pitch for Economy.

How significant is the more generous pitch on the left side of the aircraft, and what is the reason for this?

There's 1-2 less row in the AB section.

Have yet to fly JQ but assume this should be possible considering their check-in counters in Brisbane are basically open all day for their various daily departures from BNE.

Cheers from Brisbane,
