I would think it will be LHR for less connections. It will be a matter of trying to work out which hub has the best connection time and facilities.
I had a closer look at LHR departures and found flights to DEN with United, MSP With Delta and ORD with American Airlines. All had connections of some hours or overnight to RAP.

If you want to visit NYC first, then you may well be best off on a multi-stop ticket, or by buying two separate return tickets. I'm not sure of your location in the UK, but I tend to find that the cheapest LON-NYC fares are indirect flights via a US hub, whilst indirect one stop flights via a hub like AMS or CDG are normally the same price from the regional UK airports.
Personally I'd avoid LHR and take the regional option if it's closer to home - AF/KL/DL will cover you pretty well wherever you want to route.
