Delta.com Totally Useless For Free Seat

I been a elite member with nw for many years now and have recently be switched to delta. I been trying to book award international flight on delta.com but meeting nothing but frustration. Nwa.com use to show carriers such as KL, AF, evern Aeroflot and China Southern which makes it extremely easy for travel flexibility. Furthermore it always shows only mid and hight redemption is available and low is like never. I really miss nwa.com and hope delta will treat their loyal customers better before i switch to One World or Star!

Don't hold your breath.... Delta's IT is TERRIBLE and this has been a MUCH lamented problem on FlyerTalk's Delta forum for a LONG LONG time...

Simply put either

1) Delta doesn't care.
or

2) Delta cares but doesn't want to put the $$ into improving their IT

or

3) Delta PREFERS having a broke-ass system so that customers do not try to redeem their frequent flier miles...

I'll also point out that Delta and Amex give out "SkyMiles" like tic-tacs...and they have as much value...

DL has a long way to go till I am satisfied with using their online system.

We used NW to do all our planning including our children's tickets. But now under DL, to properly reserve for our entire family, we have to call DL agents. We spent 30 minutes waiting for an agent to answer only to find out that the online price for 1 adult and the phone price were actually different. When we asked about doing things online. They told us that we had to do it over the phone.

DL has become the largest airline. It replaced NW in the pacific but seems to be far behind everyone when it comes to overall online/IT services.

I totally agree with you on this one. I too have been a long time Plat NW member now with Delta. I also had to deal with the agents and 'tell' them to look at KLM and other carriers because even their system seems to prioritize just DL flights. But once they do manual searches and connections, they seem to see the flights but to no avail. However, last year I scored J class seats on SQ via Skymiles using standard miles!! (only 120K each for Business seats for two to Singapore) which I was quite surprised. But this summer I tried to get seats for Rome and could not get any J seats even 9 months out. I used to get NW seating quite easily (relatively speaking). Yes, DL likes to dole out miles like Haloween candy which puts its value even low because you can only get Mid or High tier redemption anyway. Every time I gripe or complain about their service and treatment, they profusely apologize and throw miles as Customer Service points.

I have decided to hold on Delta once I reach 75k this year, and move my travel to Star Alliance. I wrote to CO and they sent me a status match to Plat, so I am ready to start flying CO/*A from March by which time I will have Plat for DL in 2011. I have mistakenly reached Diamond for next year, which is again useless. It is just what NW had for Plat anyway, plus Skyclub membership, boo hah... Oh the 6 complimentary network wide upgrade certs are a scam because you have to buy Y, B or M which dilutes the perk to begin with..... To say it mildly, I am NOT impressed or wooed by this 'generosity'!!

World's largest carrier means nothing if they cannot keep the loyal high flyers happy and keep them from bolting.

I agree that the Delta award travel site is primitive compared to other US airlines--slow, tedious, and does not give all the options. That having been said, I was able to book business class on Delta/KLM/Air France/Alaska from SFO to India (120,000) two months in advance, for a trip I just completed (with stopovers in Amsterdam and Paris). So it is possible even though it took several hours of trial and error online to find the flights. I did have to call to make a change (a week later for $100) to the schedule. The phone people are as nice and helpful as the website is poor.

Delta's website has been horrendous for ages. Back in the day, you couldn't even enter a partner FF#... as a SkyTeam traveler, that was very frustrating, and usually just sent my business to nwa.com; they had a more powerful search tool to begin with, and if I was going to have to call Delta anyway to enter my frequent flyer number, then WHY was I on their website to begin with!?!?

All that said, had you considered joining us at Continental? They're by no means perfect, but I sure do like them... as a gold elite.

Funny, I see the same problems with CO. CO greatly restricts standard award availability if you do not have status. Back when I was a Plat, it was great. Now? Good luck finding a standard award..... I don't think it's a Delta issue, I think it's simply yield management playing with the awards...... And as much as I hate to say it, it does make sense. You want your best customers to be able to find an award, while the guy who takes 5 years to crack 25k for a domestic reward really doesn't bring the revenue to the airline.....

CO is not the best nor are they the worst, the distiction goes to UA. DL is not user friendly and I always end up having to call the call centre to book award travel with the airlines. DL or NW or CO or... all havre their short comings and trying to get a "free" seat is almost impossible with any airline.

And I'm sure that "award" has no connection to the amount of advertising DL buys from BTM.

How DL can win any award for best website is beyond me.

Well, clearly we all have our opinions on this matter. Quite frankly, I never have good experiences navigating thru AA, United, or US. I fly DL 99% of the time and always book thru Delta.com. I feel that I could navigate their website with my eyes closed.

Are you serious?!?! Have you ever see Business Traveler magazine anywhere but in a Delta SkyClub? I have never seen the magazine anywhere else, yet alone never heard of it until Delta and NWA merged. So if you notice I'm getting at the point that the award is skewed or even bought...you're right on.

And as for trying to be flexible and patient - have you tried booking award tickets on Delta.dum? Flexibility and patience is no virtue when your simple routing, like TPA-HNL, comes up consistently showing no flights or, better yet, you get an error message. Oh the flights exist but not using Delta's horrendous website.

And finally you could be me...who spent over :90 minutes last night trying to redeem a simple System Wide Upgrade certificate (left over from the Northwest days). I was transfered six times; hung up on one while on hold for :15 minutes; told various times I couldn't use the certificate (despite what the rules read); ended up being charged a $20 reservation fee by accident even though I'm Diamond. Finally I lucked out and on my fourth placed call to "Elite" reservations I got a former Northwest agent in Minnesota who was knowledgeable, helpful and determined to see my request through. She knew more about the situation than the previous "pre-merger" Delta people, yet she had only been using Deltamatic for a few weeks. Thank god for her. A truly piss-poor showing by Delta.

...and the System Wide Upgrade was valid on any fare booked, upgradeable into 'D' or 'F' class. Thanks to the late red tail for their generosity rewarding my generosity. Not the nilly-willy garbage SWU's Delta gives that are not valid on any fare and only upgradeable into their upgrade class 'G' which is virtually non-existent on International and Hawaiian flights.

Completely Agree. Time and time again I can find lower fares on the same Delta flights using Orbitz or pretty much any other site out there.

For Free Seat

If you want seats for less than twice as much as all other airlines want, then I have to agree with that, too. I tried to book four different award flights this year. Every single time they came back with 60,000 for a domestic round trip in coach and 125,000 for a round trip Economy ticket to Europe. For all four trips United offered award seats for 25,000 domestically and 55,000 to Europe.

I used to fly Star Alliance and still had a lot of miles there, so I simply used Mileage Plus miles. After I stopped flying UA, I used NW a lot and was reasonably happy with WorldPerks. But SkyMiles? It's a joke, that's all. I will actually return to United this year as I am not prepared to continue flying Delta if they treat their frequent fliers like this. Oh, and I am Elite by the way, so if availability for standard customers is restricted even further, then good luck getting anything.

It's all about mere opinion...

I hate the websites of UA and AA, but absolutely LOVE Delta. When a person is used to a certain website, he is obviously going to have a bias. So when you switched from NWA to DL, you are obviously experiencing some withdrawals, that's fine. It will take some time to get used to.

For instance, last week, using the DL website, I booked and award flight for the FOLlOWING day for SVO-JFK-SFO-JFK-SVO for 60,000 miles. DL gave me thousands of options, even one day in advance. The booking calendar was easy to use, and I could have easily selected any day of the month and known how many miles I was going to use, and what the peak periods were. By the way, AF flights were listed as well.

Hang in there, improvements happen over time, so I'm sure the problems that you have will be fixed in due time, write a comment email to IT, maybe they will take you constructive criticism and use it to improve the site further.

I'm sorry but I just don't understand when people get on A.NET and spill out all these problems, when the first step needs to be a comment card to the airline regarding the problem. If the airline doesn't get feedback, how are they supposed to know you are an unsatisfied Elite member. If you have indeed already written something to DL, please disregard this paragraph as it applies to all the thousands of other members complaining about airlines and their rules.

Hmm, the exact oposite for me. DL.com is always cheaper than the other websites. I always check trvelocity first to see if Air Trash is that much cheaper then i'll head over to DL.com and purchase the ticket. It's actually DL's policy to offer the lowest fair on the net. If you find another site charging more for a ticket on a specific leg than on the same site, I GUARANTEE you that DL will offer you the fligth for the same price or cheaper if you choose to ue DL.com

Again, this is never needed for me becasue 100% of the time, the prices are exactly the same or a little cheaper on DL's website).

Totally agree.

Booking in advance does not mean award seats are there for booking. I have experienced with NW that they actually released more saver seats as my travel dates get closer even in Business Class. I personally prefer NWA.com but Delta.com is not that bad. Yes, there were times the site is down for maint. or an error message which I experienced the same things with other websites like bank sites etc.

When I have to make a call to the call center, I usually have my date range and flights that I want ready for the agents to look them up for me. If my flights on my plan A does not work, I move on to the flights on my plan B. I think the key point is know what you want to book, and if it is not available, then oh well, I will just use it next time. Airlines do not have to offer award travel.

Odd. I've had, overall, fairly good success with Skymiles award tickets, albeit, I've only done domestic. My girlfriend is using a frequent flyer award ticket to fly into Florida tomorrow night. We booked two weeks in advance and were still able to get a mid-range for the dates we wanted (Wednesday night to Sunday afternoon). My only complaint was having to pay a $75 "late processing fee" since the ticket was booked 14 days out. A little absurd in my opinion but the dates the girlfriend could come down were not flexible (ie, we couldnt wait another week or two to avoid the "late processing fee").

Back in late August I was able to book a ticket for First/Biz Class MCO-LAX-ATL-MCO for 45,000 miles and there was plenty of availability.

My biggest frustration with the Delta website came this past weekend, and yes, I agree, the website does not always show everything available. When my flights Friday night were cancelled, I was rebooked on the "earliest available flight" as Sunday around noon. I called Delta (and was on hold for an hour and a half) and the agent was then like "oh there's plenty of availability Saturday morning" so I was rebooked for Saturday morning. Turned out those flights were canceled too and I just canceled my trip altogether, but yes, the website does have some work to do in terms of showing all available options.

Same here jfk777. Overall I've found the DL website easy to use and navigate and only on very rare occasions have had trouble booking a ticket, and I believe its more related to the billing address on my credit card being complicated than it is the website. Now that my information is saved to my account, booking through delta.com has been a breeze.

Well, if the reward were skewed by DL travelers, why were so many awards going to Star Alliance members? Not sure that I completely agree with that statement.....

Also, I booked an award flight for my honeymoon (August 24-Sept 5). My wife and I went from DTW-ATH, FCO-DTW all in Business Class and it was so easy to find and book this trip. We each used 100,000 skymiles and paid approximately $70 in taxes and fees. The system is usable and flexibility is key, anyone in the aviation industry will tell you that. Simple supply and demand is at work here. It always helps to know when you want to travel and start looking well in advance. I have already booked our next award trip over the summer. We are back in Business Class to Dubai and only used 120,000 skymiles for that trip. I am not a believer of all these hits at the website, system and lack of availability.
