I hope to go to FRA this weekend for spotting and then I mean only looking for registration numbers, not taking pictures. I guess the best place is a McDonald's in T1 (LH Terminal) ? I haven't been to FRA for a while so would appriciate any suggestions.

Correct! There is currently no spotting location around Terminal 1.
But the platform in T2 is not bad, especially if it's sunny. But you have to pay a fee for entering it.
There is a McD where you say and it is airside. Get a table near the window at Kuffler & Bucher next door, I have spent many a pleasant hour there watching the planes go by.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I heard/read the "no liquids " rule also applys to people who want to go out on the observation deck. Anyone confirm this? If true I think its a bit silly...but then so is just about all aspects of airport security.

Thanks again for the info ! Had a great time spotting and got 110 new registrations in one day. Finished the day with a excellent Wienersnitzel at Kuffer & Bucher!!!!!
