Many months ago I asked a similar question (thread here ), but I have now decided I would like to travel to this area. Researching the flights is easy - lots of options on the Tu-154, but I'm hearing things like this about the airport itself, which I've got to say is putting even me off a bit:

Quote:
Mineralnye Vody: To reach this airport, in the north Caucasus, passengers pass through a series of military roadblocks, where documents and the boots of cars are checked by slouching policemen, looking for weapons or terrorists. But a sensible terrorist would leave his weapons at home and buy new ones at the airport, where a wide selection of enormous knives and ornamental Caucasian swords is on sale. There are also embossed Caucasian drinking horns, and a large number of Brezhnev-era copies of the Kama Sutra.Mineralnye Vody airport is a lower circle of hell. In Soviet times, before the region that the airport serves was desolated by separatist insurgencies, blood feuds and government brutality, the nearby mineral spas were popular holiday resorts. The building is incongruously large for a part of Russia that today, for all its macho hospitality and merriment, feels more African than European in its violence, poverty and corruption. It is weirdly cold inside. Feral cats have been sighted. The floor has not been cleaned since perestroika; the toilets are hauntingly squalid. On the wall there are arrival and departure boards that no longer work, and a big, proud map of the Soviet Union.

There's also counter claims that it's not at all that bad, but it leaves me wondering if there are any special requirements for visiting this region, or if a normal Russian visa would do the trick?

Any help or feedback on what the place is really like and the reputation is justified, especially from the Russian members on this forum, would be most appreciated.

Hello Dan,

I haven't been myself there (yet), so it's not first hand information i can give you, but indeed MRV has been one of the worst Russian airports, but i seems to remember they did some overhauling of the terminal.

I guess that when you possess a correct visa for the region then it won't be a problem, so as long as you can get a visa for that region then you should be okay.

I'm not Russian, nor have I been, but I did look up information on Russia on the US State Dept. website and it warns of travel to the north Caucasus. It also says that a visa is sufficient to enter and leave Russia, and the limit is 90 days. Of course, locals would be able to better fill you in on the specifics of the region, but this gives a pretty good overview.

Hi and thanks Severnaya

It would be good - I mean I'm not too bothered about the state of the terminal building or the facilities, it's just the overzealous guards making things hard for me which I'm keen to avoid, so hopefully they've relaxed a bit.

I'm entering 'Mineral Vody and Kislovodsk' on my visa, it's the latter I'll be staying in I expect as there are lot more hotels. I'm leaving booking anything until I have the visa in my hand though, just in case.

Thank you, I know some of the neighbouring regions and areas onwards into Georgia are, hmm how do I say it, 'less than desirable!' They're also pretty beautiful and I would love to explore them one day, but I'm going to wait until people have stopped throwing their toys out of the pram first.
