Hi everyone!

I live in southwest Missouri (SGF is my local airport) and I am going to LAX for a cruise in October. I knew that G4 has a nonstop to LAX, but based on the current times they fly (their schedule/fares for October isn't released yet), it wouldn't work out. I am going in a day early before the cruise (Saturday), that way, if there are any flight problems, I wouldn't miss the cruise. Coming back, my cruise returns at 7:00 AM on that Sunday, so I needed a 12:00-1:00 PM flight return flight from LAX.

The legacy carriers out of SGF were $405 + tax and then you add bag fees, we're pushing $500. I also looked out of BKG and FL had a decent price ($139 each-way), but, again, the schedule wouldn't work out for the times I need. WN's schedule isn't out yet, but their fares, on average, at MCI, were much higher than everyone else (averaging $160-200 each way).

So, I looked at STL, and I found a great fare on FL: $97 each-way! It's apparently part of the nation-wide fare sale that FL is currently having, where prices have basically been cut in half. With taxes/fees/seat fees, I paid just under $250! Plus, the schedule worked out well! I was amazed!

Sorry for the long background, but I felt it was necessary to provide before my question.

Anyway, after booking my FL flight, I started reading reviews (just for the heck of it!) and I what I read concerned me. A lot of people were reporting that FL has been allowing people's bags to go with just the $15 fee on the departure flight, but when they come home, the FL agents find a way to deem their bags "oversized" and they get whammed with a $49 oversize bag fee, in addition to the original $15.

The vast majority of the comments said that they were charged the oversized bag fee on their return flight. I only plan to check one bag, which I measured at 58" (L+W+H), but I am worried at the possibility that someone will try to scam me.

Is this something that I should be concerned about, or should everything be ok? Thanks!

***I've flown many times, but FL only once, and was before they offered the ability to pay to select your seats and we got stuck in the abominable Row 31 on a 717. UGH! That was a nightmare.....no window and I was utterly miserable!

I have one suitcase that is larger than a typical roller board type bag. It generates a bit of attention both to size and weight. Specifically on FL the agent both measured the bag and verified the weight, but then commented "It looks bigger than it is." Immediately she blushed, and responded "What kind of a comment is that to say to a guy." We all laughed and off we went.
So traveling both short haul and coast-to-coast with them, I have had no problem whatsoever using this one bag. DL gives it the once over as well and WN smilingly checks it without comment. I think you'll be fine from my own experiences with FL. Nice folks.
It appears you paid a seat fee. Exit rows on both the 717 and 737 are worth the $$$ for a longer flight. The exit row on a 737 is very comfortable with lots of legroom. I otherwise find seats on both a bit tight and opt to buy exit row and upgrade if available depending on flight length.
If you consider upgrade within your 24 hour check-in opportunity, be mindful that row 1 on both A/C types have limited/restricted legroom at the bulkhead. Rows 2 and 3 are much better.....row 2 my favorite.
I've done 3 cruises from Long Beach, including the cruise transfer between LAX both ways. Definitely on your return buy the cruise line transfer bus. You'll be in the first wave of guests off the ship, bus at the pier and a direct ride to LAX. Takes about 40 minutes....easy and convenient. Well worth the money. You can buy the transfers on the ship up to day before arrival back in Long Beach.
I hope you enjoy the ride on FL and your cruise. Be careful buying those drinks on cruise ship with the cute umbrella and the Calypso music playing on deck and sun and wind in your face......that Sign and Sail Account is a rude awakening when it is slipped under your cabin door on the final morning! It kind of offsets all that money you saved flying FL..........but have a great time!

Thank you so much for your very informative response, Thomas! I really appreciate it! So, it looks like I shouldn't have any trouble on FL. That's great to hear!

I'm actually going on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas out of the L.A. cruise terminal. I'll see how much the transfer is on the way back.

Thanks again for responding!

To clarify. Your RCCL cruise will depart from the Los Angeles Cruiseport in San Pedro. Carnival sails from Long Beach. My apologies for any confusion in my previous reference to Long Beach.
Your travel agent or if booked with RCCL direct can add the transfers to your booking now and those charges will be included in your final payment amount about 75 days prior to sailing. Simply provide your FL flight departure information. You can overnight in the San Pedro area and get to the pier easily by taxi the morning of your cruise departure.
Budget now for the potential to upgrade to Business class. On the long ride from ATL those seats are very comfortable and the FL service upfront is worth the upgrade cost. On my last flight ATL-SAN, the folks traveling in row 2 across from me drank all the beer, so I had to resort to Vodka Tonics and Martini's to pass the time. Could hardly walk off the plane and don't even remember the taxi ride to Mission Valley. The F/A's were terrific, even on a late evening flight after their long day and I enjoyed the flight as much as any other airline up front. If you don't ride up front, pick exit rows. Great legroom on 717 and 737.
The WOW factor is not there for food, but professional and friendly service, a comfortable seat and a nice 737-700 ride is a good deal any day on FL.
You'll enjoy the ride on RCCL as well. Great cruise line.
