What's the difference between flying first class and flying business? Are they the same thing? And what about coach and economy? Are they the same thing too?

Coach = US / Economy = most of the rest of the world . To all intents and purposes they are the same thing - it is just that you guys have a different name for it .

first class and flying business

Generally speaking First (F class) is the top offering of an airline. Business (C or J class) is one step lower. Premium Economy (W) and Economy (Y) complete the cabin.

Many airlines offer a Business cabin, but not a First cabin. For example VS, whose 'Upper Class' is technically a Business Class product.

Many 'flag carriers' and major airlines offer a 4 class service, with F, J, W and Y cabins. Others commonly seen are F/C/Y or C/W/Y cabins.

'Coach' is just another word for economy.

Using BA as an example (although some of these pics may be slightly out of date):

The biggest step down in service/seating is between J and W as you can see.

Most airlines discontinued calling it First Class and just called it Business Class because of the perception (i.e., KL/NW) As previously mentioned some are swinging back to First also.
