I'm looking at going to PDX April 6-10th and the only morning flight out of MCW has me do a double connect (MCW-MSP-SLC-PDX), however my step dad is currently booked MCW-MSP-PDX on DL*3167 and DL 2527. I hate to spend 50,000 miles on the direct MSP-PDX + $85, so what is the chances I could get on the direct MSP-PDX but booking the double connect for 32,500? It would make things a lot easier since I will need a car and could ride with him if were on the same flight. I see the MSP-PDX is fairly booked, however the MSP-SLC-PDX is pretty open, so I see why it's less miles. My other concern is I would only have 36 minutes to connect in MSP, which is really pushing it getting from the connection to mainline gates. What is the chances 1. DL will catch this and send me direct or 2. I will miss my connection and get on the MSP-PDX flight anyway?

Next flights: WN DSM-LAS-PHX, US PHX-SJD.

I swear to god some of these crazy connections have to be computer glitches in the delta system! and no i would not trust a 35 minute connection in MSP. I had an hour connection one time and almost missed my flight!

You can pay $50 (free if Gold/Plat/Diamond) to do a same-day confirmed from the flight with the crazy connection to a nonstop. For my flight today, I had booked GNV-ATL-IND-MSP but same day confirmed to skip the IND connection and just did GNV-ATL-MSP.

Probably none. DL has become very strict about any kind of rebooking for reward and low-tier fare tickets.

Couple of examples:
1) Over New Years, I was booked in F on a reward ticket to California from Florida (MCO-LAX). The flight originally left MCO at 8:00 AM or so. They then moved the flight to 7:20 AM a couple months out. Since I was coming from Daytona and relying on a friend to drive me, and now realizing how much earlier I would have to leave, I called DL to see if I could rebook since it was a schedule change on their part. I didn't have to be in California by any particular time so I didn't care if I left was rebooked for 9 AM or noon. But they told me "No. If you want to rebook for a later flight, it will be $100".

2) Over MLK weekend I flew up to DTW from DAB. My itinerary left me with a 3.5 hour layover in ATL (approximately 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM). When I arrived in ATL, there were TWO flights leaving for DTW before my flight to DTW at 9:30, and I knew they both had plenty of open seats. I asked if I could switch or standby, even at the gate (I had all carry-on luggage), but they told me I would have to pay $50 to do so.

About the only way you'll get rerouted direct to PDX from MSP is if there's an IROP of it your initial flight into MSP is delayed and you missconnect - then you may be lucky enough to skip the extra connection in SLC.

They aren't glitches. The computer is matching up "lower fares" or in this case "lower miles". The "low mile" seats on the MSP-PDX nonstop are gone, but the computer is recognizing that there are some "lower mile" tickets available on the MSP-SLC and SLC-PDX legs and thus matching these up. The user can then decide which is more valuable to them - their miles or their time. This happened to me on more than one occasion. My girlfriend has done the "unnecessary connection" a few times flying from Florida to DTW when she's come to visit , once through CVG, once through MSP, and once through ATL. That's how it goes sometimes.

And since their awards tickets are valued based on what those routes would cost if paid in $, the mileage requirements often vary frequently. I recently booked a JFK-ATL-BZN--MSP-JFK ticket (with stops at ATL and BZN), which had originally been costed at 52K miles. 4-5 days later it went down to 25K - which I obviously proceeded to book. IMO the unpredictability of the redemptions on DL dilutes the value of their rewards program - you never know if your miles will be worth something decent.

Definitely not the case.

It's all done in revenue management and how close you are from the flight. Low level award seats tend to open up a lot more as you're very close to the flight, which I love since I can often grab a 25k award ticket a day or two before departure and only have to pay the $5-10 extortion fee that allows TSA to exist.

Delta is known to be stingy far out and gradually open things up.

Definitely not what? I said that their redemption values were not predictable - and you're pointing out that they are highly fluctuating. I don't get what the disagreement is.

I believe what you're saying is that you can still get a 25K award - but usually very last minute. That may work for you, but not for the 98% of other travelers who need to make prior arrangements (ie business or social meetings, hotel and car rental arrangements, travel companion planning). And there's also a redemption fee of $75-$150 for booking within 21 days non-elite members, which again makes your strategy completely pointless for most passengers.
