Is San Francisco International Airport 24 hours? How do I get from downtown to the airport? I normally take the limo but is there a metro now?

You should take BART.

You can take the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train to SFO, but it will take longer than driving except at the highest traffic times. The airport tram (AirTrain) will take you to the BART station, which is in the airport. Here's some BART info

http://www.sftravel.com/sfo-airport-transit-bart.html

Check to see how far the BART stations are from where you're staying. There are only a few stops in San Francisco, so you could be quite far from a stop. That may require to you transfer to a bus or one of the local SF MUNI trains if you want to say on public transit.

All that said, I always just take a cab. Shouldn't be more than $40 or so to the downtown hotels, but I don't recall exactly.

From SFO to Embarcadero (the last SF stop before the East Bay) is a $16.20 roundtrip ticket and it is about a 60 min train ride roundtrip. Find out where you want to go and pick a train stop accordingly. I'd avoid Muni buses because they are notoriously unreliable. The Muni trains are hit or miss. I'd just walk to wherever you need to go after you ride BART. We've had some great weather this past week so it's a good time to walk though I'd bring a light jacket because it is windy at times. Definitely have something warm for the night time. SF rarely has a warm night, even in the heat of summer.

BART worked great for us...I believe it's the yellow line that gets you out there....

I think we took Civic Center out to the Airport for $8 or so.

The airport has flights that come in & out 24 hours but BART is NOT 24 hours.
What time does your flight come in?

MUNI will certainly cause you to be late and/or miss a flight so avoid it if your here for only 24 hours.

Again, what time do you arrive?
I could refer you to some cheap hotels & hostels for 1 night.
