Hi, personally, I think AA has the best livery out there. Its definitely one of my favorites. It's a classic. But what if AA changed its livery? What would it look like? What are the chances that AA will change its livery?

AA's livery still looks as good as it did when it was introduced 42 years ago. I can last another 40 years without any problem. Just think of the millions of $ AA has saved over the years compared to carriers that change their livery every few years and pay huge amounts for design companies to come up with new liveries that, in my opinion, are usually worse than the old ones.

Well, when they take on the 787 they won't be able to do bare metal...there isn't any LOL! In that case, it will probably be similar to when they first got the A300's and they were painted, or maybe even like the American Eagle painted c/s.

I doubt very highly that AA wants to change a thing at this time. They have a very strong brand recognition worldwide.

But the painted grey looks disgusting compared to the bare metal, I hope they change the livery with the intro of the 787. Nothing major to the logo, just some tweaks to the body to stop using the bare metal lookalike.

Let's hope not.

Herpa Wings and a few other model scale makers have managed to get an exact bare metal look on plastic.

That would be interesting to see an airline consult with a model plane / toy manufacture for their livery.

Why not just use silver metallic paint as Aeroflot does:

it is silver not the nice metal look of AA, on an AA plane you can see a reflection, I doubt you could have the same mirror effect on Areoflot

AAs livery is a Symbol which I have grown up with and I want it to stay for many years to come! Cmon guys if there is the technology to make a 787 there surely has to be the technology to create a bare metal look on the fuselage!

If AA decides to stick with their classic scheme (which I do love), then I would imagine they'll treat any planes with composites the same way they did the A300. Recall that these birds were initially just painted grey due to the use of composites in their bodies, but later were updated with a silver finish to better match the rest of the AA fleet (before shown on left, after shown on right).

If they could make it a metallic silver, why not make it chrome silver with a reflective finish? There's no need to change the livery with the introduction of the 787. The bare metal look can be simulated with the appropriate paint finish.

IIRC, most if not all the Herpa models (including the pics of ones you posted) are metal not plastic.

I have a few Herpa 717s (FL, TW & YX) that are definitely metal.

Back to the topic at hand, AA doesn't need to change its livery layout and logo just because of the composition of the 787.

The only change I would recommend is that the vertical fin be also given the same treatment. When AA's current livery first rolled out; all the planes feature bare metal on the vertical fin which looked a lot better IMHO.

True most are metal, not plastic. However they do have a DC-3 that is made of plastic with bare metal paint.
I made a mistake by showing the 757 retro livery. That is made of metal.

Oh yes, I use that paint quite often on my models. I have some nice bare metal models including a DC-3, B727 and B777 in my collection
