Hi guys, I need a little help here.

I'm travelling to Athens this October/November for a University field trip... I'm currently in the process of finding fares and booking the flights. Now, I'm going to choose Swiss (LX) and I have a choice of arrival times... I can either arrive in Athens at 16:35 and pay £106, or pay £77 to arrive in Athens at 00:10. I'm leaning toward the 00:10 arrival but am reserved about the transport options at this time of night... I can't seem to make head nor tail of them

I haven't booked a hotel for the night in question yet, but I'm pretty certain it will be in the City Centre or surrounding areas. One line I looked at is OASA's X95, but I do not know how much this costs/what sort of service is at this sort of hour (I know the airport services are 24H).

Similarly, when I return, my flight is at 06:30 and I need to be out early from the City Centre again. I'm assuming again that I will use line X95 or similar, but again don't know the costs/schedules.

I know I sound pretty hopeless, haha, usually I can figure out my rough transport plans (I'm sorted for Munich just fine!) but the Greeks have me stumped on this one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Daniel.

Yes the bus does run around the clock, but I strongly suspect they have reduced frequency at such middle of the night hours. Last I remember its cost was about 3 Euros.
There is also the metro that runs to the airport but I dont believe that its 24 hours(or atleast was not before ending around midnight and does not resume till 5am or something)

Personally I'd opt for a taxi into Athens especially at your late/early which by European standards are pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the reply   3 EUR doesn't sound too bad, although I'd definitely consider a taxi depending on the cost purely because of the time of night/morning it is.

Anyway, some further info/requests if anyone can help...

I've booked the flights, and I will indeed be arriving at 00:10 on a Sunday morning, and departing 06:30 on a Sunday morning, if that gives any more ideas as to bus frequencies etc.

Also, I'm looking for hotels to stay at. Both stays will be 1 night only, once the night of my arrival, and once the night before my departure... any recommendations? I can't really afford a great deal of money for hotels, so I'm looking for something decent but not pricey.

Any help, once again, appreciated.

Take a look at this website:
http://www.toandfromtheairport.com/athens.html

Seems that metros run until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights.

As for hotels, we stayed here:

Don't be put off by the name, it's quite a nice hotel. The "Hotel Fresh" is right opposite. They are about 10 mins walk from Omonia metro, but it's not the best area - a few "red light" shops around.

Excellent, thanks for those links Signol   Much appreciated. I'll definitely consider that hotel, looks good and the price is decent too since I only need 1 night stays each end of my trip.

I stayed there last year during my extended weekend in ATH and really liked the hotel.

Excellent, thanks   quite a number of their hotels in Athens are reasonably priced for my dates, so I may consider this. The Zinon especially is a short walk from Syntagma Square, which is where the X95 Express service arrives from/departs to the airport.

Thanks for all the help everyone, have a much clearer picture now of what I'm going to do.
