Hi, I am going to Chicago next month, and I'd like to spot at O'Hare airport, but I don't know any decent spots except one. I'd preferably like to catch departures rather than landings.

Thanks!

I know I am bumping the thread, but I am mildly suprised noone has responded yet.

Does anyone know of any place that is close to the airport perimeter that I can view departures?

Not sure about around the perimeter but inside ORD the best place I have found is at the end of concourse L. It just sucks now that they've taken all the seats away. It's relaxing though. Plenty of views of the international terminal, and plenty of aircraft passing by the alpha and bravo bridge on their way to 32R.

Ok thanks, I'll check those places out.

Anyone know about the perimeter?

Stay loose and keep watching. The back seat of a Chicago police car is a lousy place to photograph airplanes.
STAY AWAY FROM THE ORD PARKING DECK....I've been run off there a few times.

If planes are landing on 9R, there are factory parking lots on the west boundry you can park in IF its a weekend.

The side streets near the Elmhurst/Devon intersection are great for spotting landings. It's a warehouse park, but one really shouldn't stick around too long. In the past, I've popped my hood to buy some time.

Also, near the Allstate arena there is a shopping center parking lot. Again allowing nice views of landings with no risk. But you won't find any widebodies at this spot.

There's nothing quite like a tri-jet.

Get out!? I must have spent a full hour up there taking pics one day last summer and no one approached me. Come to think of it I've been told to put my camera away numerous times at airports here in Ireland but not once in the US.

You must have been disguised as a 2005 Impala. The two airports I have had lousy luck taking pictures and being harassed the most is ORD and DTW.

The two I find most friendly is PHX and MIA.

Was it the Chicago Police that approached you? I've spent hours walking around the 4 terminals just taking pics and nothing. I may take it down a notch this year though!

Yes...a couple times on the deck in the late 90's. In a squad car no less.
At first I thought is was a security firm, but it was CPD with car markings and those special hat markings CPD wear.
I now avoid the deck. I only suggest others do the same. I was there BEFORE 9-11.

My son takes pictures at the end of L and on UA C and was questioned once by TSA doing a walk-around on the C. That was it. The photos continued.

I was at the back of the Ramada on Mannheim RD around 1998 or '99 and took photos of landings on 22L. Thats private property and I was staying there.......no problems. The hotel security folks only waved. They must get a few photographers there.

What RWY is that off of? I always remember flying over Target but always forget what RWY. And I remember a BA747 depart right over our heads as we were walking into Target.

Looks like 4L/22R according to Google Earth.
