I am flying Delta from OMA to MKE on August 5th and back on August 14th. (don't ask why I didn't just go non-stop on AirTran or Midwest.) I purchased a Coach ticket today and I was wondering how much it would cost to Upgrade to 1st and how I would go about doing it. I am a non-medallion member.

Have you tried calling Delta and asking ??

Also next time, just purchase a first class ticket to start with and avoid this hassle. Should work every time.

well, it will be the difference in price of the ticket plus a change fee. Yes they will charge you this fee even when you are upgrading and giving them more money. To be honest with you, for the duration of flights and aircraft type it really is not worth it. You are better off saving your benjamins and using them for another flight.......might I suggest a one way LAX-ATL on the 77L........or try to even snag a DTW-ATL or ATL-DTW flight on either 777 sometimes. This could be somewhat more affordable.

Totally agree! not worth what it would cost. Save your money and have a nice night out on the town instead!

What was the fare code (i.e. the letter)? Unless you booked a full-fare economy (code letter Y) ticket, it's gonna be tough and expensive. Most economy fares are K or U or some other letter, which is actually discounted economy.

You probably won't be able to do it. At least not easily. Unless you were booked in fare class Y or higher (anything higher than full-Y is already business or first class), it won't be easy. Lots of restrictions.

You know what you can do, and every time I say this everyone tells me the gate agent must be smoking crack to allow this, but if it's not extremely important simply be nice, dress nice, and ask the gate agent for an upgrade. I have done it many times, so I guess there are a lot of gate agents out there that smoke crack.

I just noticed on Delta's check-in kiosk demo on delta.com that they have an option to upgrade. Does this work?

With Delta, for non-elite members looking to upgrade, it isn't possible from a L/U/T fare. You need to buy up to a minimum of a K fare.

Once you have a minimum of a K fare (Y/B/M/H/Q/K), you have two options:
Option 1 is upgrade using miles. 5000 miles for a full Y; otherwise I believe it's 15k miles.
Option 2 is upgrade at the day of departure. If it looks like there will be more open seats in First than Medallions looking to upgrade, Delta will sell upgrades to those on K+ fares. I'm assuming such a routing above is OMA-MSP-MKE and return; it would be $50 per flight. However, as noted above, the OP would have to pay the $150 change fee + difference in fare to get up to the K fare.

As an aside, both MSP-OMA and MSP-MKE are elite heavy routes. My guess is F will get full on both routes on the 5th with Medallions sitting in the back. On the Aug 14th return, there might be F seats open, but it's a crapshoot.

Delta has been cracking down on unauthorized upgrades lately. The only valid reasons for upgrades right now are elites and only upgrading non-eligible people once all proper avenues have been exhausted and there are still more people in Y than there are seats (op-ups). Anything other than that could be grounds for termination, and I don't think any agent is going to risk their job for that. There is some flexibility with the policy (I saw military personnel get free upgrades on July 4th earlier this year, when there were empty seats in F on all of my flights), but that is rarely the case. Dressing and asking nice will (and should) simply have the GA ask for your credit card to appropriately process the transaction.

Honestly, save up for a bit longer of a route. I did MSP-MKE around 10 times last year, with pretty much all of them in First Class (only time I missed was on a Monday morning MKE-MSP on a 757, where I was no. 12 on the list as a top-tier elite on a K fare). You'd have enough time to have 1-2 beers and a couple of passes of the snack basket. I wouldn't consider even paying the $50 to upgrade if I wasn't an elite frequent flyer...just not good value for cost. Save up for some longer routes where at least you get a meal and can enjoy the experience.
