In my recent experiences I have encountered some very weird and sometimes annoying check-in procedures. Here are some examples:

I have noticed at the AS counters at PDX have kiosks at the front of the queues. They have you print your boarding passes at the kiosk, then step forward to get your bags tagged. You are then told to go to a numbered CTX machine where you drop off your tagged bags.

UA uses a similar operation in BOS. There are kiosks in front of the desks, and a UA representative at the line points you to an open kiosk to get your boarding passes, pay for bags etc. Then there is one representative behind the counter manning 2-4 kiosks, running back and forth tagging bags. A lot of times I feel like: "Quit showing me where the kiosks are, and do your jobs!".

We'll save the weirdest one for last. I flew PDX-SFO on UA this summer, and checked into the flight online and payed for my bag the day before. When I got to the UA counters at PDX I see a sign at the front of the line that says something along the lines of "All passengers with web boarding passes go to baggage drop downstairs, next to baggage carousel #10". WTF? What is this about? Sure enough, I go downstairs to the arrivals level and to the UA baggage services room next to their carousel (#10). There is one representative there. I ask her if this is baggage drop, and she says yes. She looks at my boarding pass, gives me my claim stub, and tags my bag. She then tells me just to leave it outside the door. Outside the door? How do I know that someone will collect it? How do I know that it will make it upstairs to the scanners?

Luckily it did indeed make it to SFO no problem, but what is the reason for this ridiculous check-in/bag drop process?

Pretty much every airline in the US do the kiosks now...and many around the world, too. I have done it in the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Germany and Brazil.

Definitely haven't heard a "go to another level to drop off the bag thing" before, that's new to me! However, the whole leaving your bag by the door thing is familiar to me. I know I have done it with, actually, QF before.

Money money money. Less staff is required. Before, you could only check in 1 passenger/group per 1 staff member...now you can do 1:2 or 1:4, as you mention.

All true. But I have still seen the traditional system used fairly often, mostly in common use facilities it seems.

Screwiest check in's??? As much as I love the U.S. Virgin Islands, try checking in for your flight at STT on any given Saturday!

A big vote to Cathay here. They do some things I don't understand. I flew SFO - HKG - CGK last weekend.

1/ They only allowed web check in to flights that were within the window. For ex: I could check in only to SFO - HKG once I reached the check in window opened even though I was going all the way to CGK. I had to check in to the HGK - CGK leg 14 hours later!
2/ When I checked into HKG - CGK, I was asked to re-enter the information such as Nationality, country of residence, passport etc !!
3/ Even though I had added my Asia Miles FF number to my reservation, the number did not carry forward at the time of web checkin. I got a message from their website that it couldn't be added, and I had to re-add it at the airport. I don't understand the disconnect there.

Have you been anywhere else in the Caribbean? Because that has been my experience at PLS, SJU, and NAS too, so I can only assume it's the whole region.

That always happens to me too. Granted, I have AAdvantage so that could cause the disconnect, but I fly CX multiple times a year and have never successfully entered my AAdvantage number through CX's website!

Smaller airports too...from my experience, you would be more likely to run into manual check-in at stations like Grand Forks, Flint, etc. rather than LAX, ATL, ORD. Note I am not saying those places do NOT have kiosks, I am not sure, but my point is smaller airports have kiosks less often in my experience. However, this is changing rapidly...

When I was flying to YUL from SVO, I was bringing back some vodka in my checked baggage and wanted to have it labelled as fragile. The check in agent tagged my bag and put it on a shelf behind her.

Now anyone who has been to the older terminal at SVO would know that each flight has a pair of two counters with conveyer belts that go straight to the laterals downstairs. When passengers are done checking in they walk behind the counters (right by the shelf my bag was on) to customs. I was potentially freaked out about someone grabbing my suitcase or taking stuff from it.

After I checked in and saw what the arrangement was, I just grabbed it and put it on the belt.

Needless to say the vodka (only part I cared about) was OK.

Amen to that. Chaos at all the counters and an incredibly long line to go through exit customs. For anyone leaving from STT on a Saturday, get there at least 2.5 hours before your flight.
