Hey, just looking for some advice. Planning on heading to New Zealand for the world cup next year and will probably fly one of the Star carriers (unless someone else offers a great product at a great price). Have loads of options from Dublin, with the short haul connection not really mattering to me, so what to choose;
NZ (744, 777) via LAX / HKG
TG (744, 777) via BKK
SK / TG (343, 777) via BKK
SQ (380, 777) via SIN
TK / NZ (330, 763) via KIX
UA / NZ (777, 744) via SFO
LH / SQ (744, 777) via SIN
NH / NZ (777, 777) via NRT
AC / NZ (777, 744) via YVR
I've been to most of the connection cities so not too bothered about stopping over, but lounge etc in the connection airport is a consideration, as is IFE, meals, service and of course the seat.
Next Flights: EI DUB-LHR A320, BA LHR-SFO B744, UA SFO-LAS A320, BA LAS-LHR B744, EI LHR-DUB A320

While the A380 LHR-SIN would be a safe bet, I seem to remember that SQ use a clapped out 747 with the old business product SIN-AKL.

I thought about hopping over the ditch to catch a couple of games but the match ticket prices were certainly out of my league (at least for a match that was half meaningful)

They removed them from the AKL-SIN route and for quite some time, SQ285/6 has been flown by a 77W with nearly the same J as what is in the A380. Take SQ281/2 and you'll get an old cabin in a 772ER.
NZ1/2 will be a 77W daily by then, with a great product (similar to VS Business) in J. It'd probably be nice to even fly Y+ with NZ in the new spaceseat. 2nd choice for me would be SQ. Hopefully the 772s on AKL-HKG-LHR would also be fitted with the new seats by then but I don't think Business changes much between the 77W and 772 apart from things like the new cook as you order from scratch service that the 77Ws will have (then again not sure if the 772s will get this or not).
None of the other pairings of flights seem to be that great.. SK would see you through ARN surely.. TG's J isn't too bad but I think their seats are of an older style to SQ/NZ. TK is very good however I'd wonder if you want to try to get via HKG instead of KIX as the 763 ride wouldn't be that pleasant on old '90s style J seats. I don't think I need to say much about LH, AC or UA but I'm pretty sure that the other J offerings mentioned above are better, especially seeing that J is the top offering of Air NZ.

There is no way to better enjoy New Zealand then to start enjoying it on the plane. NZ has wonderful service and the Virgin Upper Class herringbone seats are great. The only bad thing I can say about NZ is that food portions from my past experience have been on the small side.
NZ has great on demand IFE. The service is top notch and friendly kiwi style. The service is very personable like most New Zealanders are. It's different from the robotic but reliably good service on SQ.
If it is cheaper, using AC to YVR or UA to SFO is not bad. UA and AC both have flat business class seats and good IFE. A.net traditionally hates North American airlines, but overall they are not bad in business.
I personally would avoid choosing LH, SK, TG or OZ. They have inferior business class products. Service might be good, but the seats are not up to par with the others.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

well have to say NZ all the way. your get a toss up between a brand new 77W or a 772 , service is fantastic, the only downside is the passport check at LAX you have to almost stand in a line for the 2 hr stop and wait. well done on comming to New Zealand for the rugby...
