Will AA ever start allowing free upgrades to all elites on domestic flights? UA and DL both do it.

I ask because due to some international travel which I was required to fly AA & BA, I ended up earning Platinum status. I have yet to fly them on a domestic route or in economy, but I am trying to figure out if it is worth switching allegiance. I am a long time AS and UA flyer and have only first signed up for an AAdvantage account earlier this year. I was Premier Executive with United for years, and they use to charge for upgrades, but switched that policy earlier this year.

Is AA behind the times in charge all elites (except ex-plats) $30 per 500 miles for upgrades?

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
