I dont think I have ever read much about "amenity kits" on A.net, yet they are important to me in a way. I think they speak volumes about an airline. They indicate class and sophistication or if the airline is having rough time. A very large airline must spend millions of dollars a year on them. LH has a very clear amenity kit strategy. An inexpensive basics in a pouch meant to be left behind. In LUFTHANSA FIRST you get a fairly swanky, often cobranded with a German brand either fashion or luggage brand with slippers and pajamas from Vaan Layck. Quite posh.
United had a very cool neoprene portfolio/like zipperd kit. Continental has had the same blue zipper bag that can hang up in your hotel room (as if) but i like the contents: mints, a pen than wont last after filling out the landing card (same as the UA new flat pen.
I thought Singapore would have been better, but one of the nicest. Delta had a very expected blue one (anyone recall the round tins on Delta?) BA I was very disappointed in - both classes, AF never boards enough. VARIG in F gave the most over-the-top leather bag with everything inside you could imagine. TAM has a new idea: they have a lovely cart filled with hundreds of goodies- you pick what you want although a strange cosmetic and lotion brand from Greece!! VARIG business i still use for my medications for 10 years now (really simple but beautifully made with just the compass in molded silver- something I would have bought!
Ebay is filled with them for collectors but I would put LH, JJ, SQ at the top and they say "classy airline as you would expect" MY PRIMARY QUESTION IS HOW MUCH THOUGHT AND HOW MUCH MONEY do airlines spend on this necessary evil!

When did that change? The one I got last November was gray. Either way, it was better than the one I received on Delta the month before. The Delta one just felt cheap. The contents were about the same, but the case itself made the Continental kit seem to have a little more class in my mind.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.
Really??? I admit their club amenity kit is rather poor, be it the bag or what is inside it. But their 'First' amenity kit is very complete in my opinion. The Dr. harris products they have inside are of a wide variety and of quite a decent size. However nice it does look, it is a pitty the bag does not have a zipper or something to keep it sealed though.
I would imagine that they put a good amount of thought and money into it. Although I also bet brands like Dr. harris, Elemis, and L'occitane give them GOOD bargains as they must make some good money off the happy passengers who pop in their stores and websites to place orders.

My experience was that it was waiting in a cubby at the seat when I boarded.

I use the brown Air France one to carry non-liquid toiletries sometimes when I travel, but of course the biggest downside is that I must use the provided mini toothbrush as a bigger one won't fit.

I don't know how much they spend but I know QF is always banging on about their designers, from amenity kits, to cutlery, crockery, seats lounges, uniforms and food too! I personally feel the designers actually put very little thought and effort into them and QF over do they whole designer thing. However it would seem that as they highlight it often it is seen by their marketing people as important.
I have a fantastic one from EK first! Nice brown leather thing I use it for my passport and documents. QF have had some great ones in F and some rubish ones in J although the current one in J seems the best for a long time.

I love getting them, especially when I'm on an airline I've never been on. EK or Emerates must be amazing given how much they comlete with each other.
I didn't mention in my original post but the WORST BY FAR was on American many years ago. It really looked like someone from HQ flew to Taiwan, asked the hotel "excuse me, which factory in Tiwan is the worst one who will make anything for the least amount of money?" id venture, given the quantities, they spent 11cents a kit. Tower would have spent more! I hope today it's better!

I don't even take them now and I notice many passengers leaving them behind when they deplane. They can accomplish the same thing at lower cost by just providing individual items (toothbrushes etc.) on request from a bulk supply. That's also more environmentally-friendly. Many carriers now only distribute business class amenity kits on overnight flights but not on daytime flights.
When I moved from Canada to GVA in the mid-1990s I had a dresser drawer full of amenity kits from at least 25 carriers, many of which no longer exist. I threw them all away as didn't have room for them.
