My father had a substantial amount of miles with United Airlines. I am wondering if these miles are still good after he saddly passed in September.

Thanks,

Sorry for your loss.

A close friend passed away a number of years ago and "willed" me his substantial FF balance (not UA though), by simply leaving me his PIN number and a pre-signed, undated letter for me to send to the airline changing his address to mine so that statements wouldn't be returned in the mail.

Since I couldn't add to the balance, the miles all had to be used up within the 3 year expiration period. The airline even allowed me to use my own credit card to pay for fees/taxes on the tickets as the traveler.

If you have a way to sign into your dad's UA account, I don't see why something similar couldn't be done.

I know that Delta will transfer miles to a deceased's relative in some circumstances.

My grandfather's miles, rest his soul, was transfered to my grandmother upon his death. He was a Flying Colonel.

NWA transferred my deceased mother's miles to my father upon request back in the early part of this decade.

How would that work considering that funeral directors get their own miles?

DL would have transferred the miles in my grandmothers account when she died, but the paperwork they wanted was more than it would have been worth. I had the passwords for her accounts so I used the miles to have magazines sent to family members and donated a bunch to charities.

NW wouldn't transfer my mothers or dads. I even offered to fax a death cert. Nope.......no deal.
Moms had enough for a free bee in someone elses name(legal with NW) but dad only had 12000.
NW(on three occasions with three different agents on the phone)said the only thing I could do was donate to
one of their causes.
So I split dads miles between a couple of charities.

When my sister passed away, South African Airways Voyager offered us two options: Either to use the mileage ourselves or to donate it to a charity. In the end we donated the miles to the "Reach for a Dream Foundation". Mileage can also be bequeathed in a last Will and Testament.

I asked this question a while back to a BA rep and they said that the mileage goes with the passenger.
