Qantas recently had a promotion (which wasnt promoted) where you could upgrade the cheapest fare codes for the usual number of points. So I was able to upgrade my $69 MEL-SYD flight to business for 8000 points.
Considering I'll get J lounge access, and hopefully plenty of food and drink I was pretty pleased.

Well, not along the exact same lines, but I was upgraded on an LAX-JFK segment two years ago because of my medallion status. My ticket was a deeply discounted Y ticket ($179 after taxes) and I sat up front in their international biz seats both directions. Really, that upgrade cost me nothing.
I did pay $150 to upgrade on Virgin America from IAD-LAX last year. It was not a bad price considering my work covered the cost.
