Getting Around On SXM

This January, my wife and I will embark on our honeymoon cruise touring various islands within the Caribbean. One of our stops will be St. Maarten. Since I do not want to be banished from the website, I feel it is my duty both as a member and an enthusiast to visit Maho Beach for pictures and the smell of Jet-A I have already informed my wife that no excursions will be reserved and our eight hours on the island will be spent in the immediate vicinity of the beach and/or airport. Anyway... is a taxi the easiest way to get to/from the port? I was reading that they aren't metered and simply go off government issued rate charts. I also read that the USD is wideley accepted? Any particular places that you can recommend near the beach and airport? I've never been to the Caribbean and probably won't make it back, so I'd like to enjoy SXM as much as possible. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I dont recommend the ATVs.. those things are death traps (it had shitty steering and i hit a parked car, but the police officer just told me to go since the car's bumper already had damage).

They have local "busses" (minivans with bench seating) that go for like $1.50 per ride. I have heard some mixed oppinions on those but I didnt have any trouble

Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

I recommend the "buses" which are minivans. They can be caught in Phillipsburg on Back Street or B Street, I can't remember. The taxis look the same but both have a sign in them saying bus or taxi. 2 years ago, it was 2USD each to Maho and 2USD back to Phillipsburg. Just make sure to leave yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship since traffic can get crazy. You can be dropped off right there at a convenience store at the north end of Maho. It was easy and a very cheap way to get over there!

Right, BUSES (Minivans) are $2 each way per Person! Traffic is in the afternoon very heavy , so take the Bus at least 2 hours before sailing.

Maho Beach has a nice bar with quite pricy drinks though! The beach is beautiful!

There is a supermarket on the other hand of the beach, very cheap cooled drinks available!

$ and Euro are taken as 1:1 so pay with Dolllar , its much cheaper !

Enjoy your trip, Maho Beach is awesome !
