Mileage Run Type Trip-potential Customs Issues?

Evening all,

At the end of the month I'm flying a mileage run type trip over three days, to catch the MD11 transatlantic. This means I'll have to go through Canada and the US, here's my itinerary;

Day 1: LHR-AMS-YUL
Day 2: YUL-ATL-AMS (last sector overnight)
Day 3: AMS-BRS

I've recently read a trip report where someone was having problems getting through customs and immigration while on a mileage run, transatlantic, from Canada. My question is, am I likely to have issues at Canadian immigration/customs and again whilst connecting through ATL? The last thing I want is to be taken into a room with no windows accompanied by several offocials with latex gloves...

Any advice and/or information regarding this will be greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance.

You shouldn't have too many problems so long as you tell them you are doing it for a mileage run. If you mention that you happen to be doing it just because you like flying then they might start to get suspicious. Having your work ID would probably help in this situation though, so it could be worth taking it along.

I was given a hard time getting into MSP after taking NW's last DC-10 flight, the border guard didn't buy that I was a student if I could afford to fly to the US just for a weekend for the hell of it. She obviously didn't know that I went for a month without beer to afford it!

Be fair and reply honest in a calm manner, in case you'll get questions. But I expect you'll be fine.
As mentioned by Dan, your work id can help in nasty situations.

The USCBP folks at YUL (where you will clear U.S. immigration) are unlikely to give you any trouble and unlikely to notice or care about how long you've been in Canada - they'll care why and for how long you'll be in the States, but "3 hours to catch my connection to Amsterdam" is an answer they get every day.

Agreed. And if they do just tell the exact truth...it ain't like there's some sort of law against mileage-running.
