Going To Granada Via AS And AA

Hello all. We are jetting off to Granada in late February. SEA - MIA - GND - MIA - DFW - SEA via AS and AA. Hope to upgrade to first class on any of the legs that we can. Last time I flew AS they charged $50/1000 miles to upgrade. How does that work with AA? Any hints on that? I would appreciate any tips especially on arrival in Granada. If you have been there how about a trip report and any impressions on the isle of Granada. Thank you kindly.

I imagine you have status with AA? If so you have to request and an upgrade online. I am not sure if you can get upgraded if you do not have status with AA without using a large amount of FF miles I think it might be 30-40K. Even with status unless you have some free upgrades you have to pay $30 for ever 500 miles long the flight is.

I’ve been to Grenada on vacation twice. I’m very fond of the place and the people. The first trip was 6 or 7 years ago (before the hurricane that hit the island) and once more recently (two years ago now).

The two trips were quite a contrast. The first was very relaxing; we stayed at a small resort close to St. George’s, and pretty much stayed put. Travel on the island consisted of walking to various restaurants and markets in the neighborhood and to the local beach, the “Grand Anse”. We caught the local mini-buses into town from time to time, but we were quite close, only a few minutes ride to the center.

The second trip was much more active. We stayed well out of St. George’s, near Gouyave ("Goo-'av"), in a Grenadian-owned bed and breakfast. Really got to know the people better on this trip and actually toured the whole island. If your interested, Gouyave has a food fair held regularly (ask about), with local chefs cooking mostly seafood from tents set up in the streets, with live bands... really enjoyable. You could hire a car up from St. Georges or take the bus, if I don’t spook you on that...

One aspect to the second trip that wasn’t so great was our reliance on the local (very small) buses. These seem amusing at first but wear on you after awhile. The roads are incredibly winding and narrow, following the coast on cliffs above the sea and the buses are often crowded, sometimes with loud music blaring. The Grenadians are patient (what choice do they have?), but this type of commuting takes a toll.

On this trip we also hired a driver for a day, which in Grenada is not so expensive, who drove us around the whole island This is easily done in one day, as the island is only 21 X 12 miles, roughly, but don’t be fooled: the roads are winding, as I said. This car tour was one of the highlights of the trip. At one point, without warning, the driver took us speeding down the now defunct runway of the Cuban-built airport, I think it was near Grenville, which played a big part of the US invasion back in the Reagan years. Ask the Grenadians about this moment in history and you get quite a range of responses!

Another highlight was having a guide to walk us up to waterfalls up in the interior. The whole island is a garden. On our hike our guide brought along plastic shopping bags to pick fruit & veggies as we went, for his own use later. He had two bags full on our return!

I hate to be so negative, but you have a 1% chance of buying a paid upgrade from AS on SEA-MIA-SEA as I have found that route incredibly tough to upgrade as an MVP Gold - those flights are usually full of paid F. If you did upgrade at the airport, it would be $150 for the SEA-MIA or MIA-SEA AS segment. If you wanted to use miles, you'd need to be on a Value fare or higher (H+), it would be 15,000 miles each way for the AS segment, and there would have to be U (upgrade) inventory when you call. I don't believe you can waitlist an upgrade with miles.

Not trying to come across as rude as the post itself seems that way! Upgrade or no upgrade, have a wonderful time!
