The Boeing 747-400, Still The Queen Of The Skies

I recently flew LAX-LHR-LAX on NZ and their 744's. Now, its been a while since I have been able to travel on a 744 being that most of the flights I have taken have been all other types of aircraft. I have to say that I was still so impressed by the performance of this beast. Both flights were jam packed and the plane lifted off and climbed with such grace and power that I fell in love all over again with this plane. She still has the grace, elegance, and power that cant be matched. To me, she will always be the "Queen of the skies". Who else agrees

747-400 is the Queen of the sky, the Airbus A380 is the King of the sky! At least for me, comfort on the A380 is far better, but the 747s will always remain a big part of aviation history! Without the 747, we might not even see the A380 today. Just my opinion.  

One thing for sure is flying both airliners over many hours over ocean makes a nervous flyer like myself more comfortable.

It is a wonderful aircraft for sure. A true workhorse that does exactly what it says on the box. Very reliable and resilient, versatile and still the fastest up there.

It carries around 40T of payload even when loaded with fuel up the brim, I doubt even the A380 can do that (ok, it doesn't go as far).
And what do you do when you're maxed out and the TO numbers don't fit the runways? Just turn off a pack or two and go...

With all respect, I have to disagree. I have flown the B747-400 with Air France, Lufthansa and SAA, and the combi version with KLM, and it is a wonderful aircraft, but I am afraid that, sentimentalism apart, it has been or is surely about to be surpassed by the new generations of long-haul aircraft. The triple seven and the A340-600 were already a much nicer aircraft to ride in many respects, for example noise and comfort wise (although, conceededly, the refurbishment in the last few years of some 747-400 have worked wonders), and they also looked great on the tarmac or in the air. Then, with the advent of the A380-800, and soon with that of the B747-800, I think that the days of the 747-400 will be numbered.

I would put it this way: the A380 is now the King of Skies (and will be more so if Airbus launches the longer -900 version), and the new B747-800 will soon be the uncontested Queen of the Skies.

There's nothing more majestic in aviation than the sight of a 747 on rotation, and the best looking of the 747 family is the 747-400. To my mind, she is the Queen of the Skies, nothing will ever dethrone her - not even the 747-8, because as much as the 747-8 is the better aircraft, it probably will not have the same impact on aviation, nor the vast numbers in the sky that the -400 enjoyed.

I haven't been on a 747 for over 15 years. I am counting down to my next flight on the 747. 8 days to go!

Surprisingly enough, this is true, if just.

With a 397t MTOW, a 747-400 can load about 47 tons of payload using a Boeing-spec OEW with a maximum fuel load.

With a 569t MTOW, an A380-800 can load about 45 tons of payload using an Airbus OEW with a maximum fuel load.

But as you note, the A380-800 would be able to fly a good bit farther on that fuel load. So on missions closer to the endurance of the 747-400, the A380-800 would be able to lift more payload.

That would work, but the use of King and Queen allows to avoid any A vs B debates, which so easily start on A.net. Plus, I really like the A380, it is amazingly stable, quiet and comfy, even looks beautiful, but it is definitely not very feminine looking, at least the 800 version looks more like a big guy than a slender girl.

That is true, the -400 is getting a bit long in the tooth, but that is what makes her special. All good things must come to an end sometime. She has withstood the test of time with flying colors so to speak. NZ's -400's are at least 15 years old but still perform like new. Dont get me wrong, I love the 777 and all the NG aircarft as well, but the -400 will always have a special place in most peopl's hearts.

Sure, I was definitely talking in practical terms. When it comes to sentiment and the history of aviation, I don't think anyone doubts the 747, and especially its -400 version will always be up there, since those aircraft changed the rules of the game, and were the first double-deckers around. However, that said, being realistic I think that the time for any 747s other than the new -800 version have almost come to an end.

The Queen is (almost) dead... long live the Queen!

I love Boeing-747. I flew on -200 and -300 and -400. On Air France and KLM - and on Transaero, of course.
I love this aircraft.

Still, looking at it (on pictures and in reality - on ground and it flight) - I should honestly say that more and more often - at least from some angles - it starts to look obsolete.
Please don't kill me - I have Transaero 747-300 on take-off right on my desk top and lap top.
But something is changing, really.
And looking at the great picture of 747-800F on take-off from ANC - which was here for days - I had this feeling.

Give the 380 a few more years to make it's mark and you'll have a whole generation of people that feel about it the way a lot of us do about the 747. But giving it King or Empress now just seems like a bit of me-too-ism.

There were few if any 744s with 9 abreast seating in Y but the regulation era 747s were great with wide seats, generous pitch and lounge areas. Today's 10 abreast 31" pitch sardine cans are like 737s with more bin space.

Fond as I am of the old bird, I am affraid its the 77W's, A346's and A380's I try and build into my long haul schedules these days....all superior in comfort to the 744 and magnificent machines in their own right

OK she's still a looker, but the cabin is just too noisy and most of the 744 fleet is already on its last fit out so interiors are generally shabby, even up front

Will for ever remember looking at the washing from the windows of Cathay 744's in that big right turn at Kai Tak and securing seats in the upper deck Business Cabins of SIA and BA 744's and enjoying the once fabulous SAA Business Class hospitality on their great white beasts on the way down to Cape Town...but thats what they are now, memories

Well, given my name on here, that should speak volumes, but I will put my 2 cents in too. Hands down the sleek curves, of both its fuselage, the wing flex on those MTOW's, the sound of the 4 engines just easing into takeoff thrust, then throttled up, I dont think there will be any other a/c that matches its appeal. Sure this is only my opinion, and shared with many others, to each his own. And IMO, VH-OEJ takes the cake of them all.

I very much agree with flaps30. The 747 in all its variants is truly the Queen of the Sky. I would also say King of the Sky! While in the U.S. Navy in 1969 I was statiioned in Seattle. Driving south on the freeway I would pass Boeing Field and see one of the first (maybe the first?) 747's parked on the tarmac. It's red and white Boeing livery and its long line of company decals of future owners stood out among all the other types at Boeing Field. A few years later I married. My wife's father was a captain for Pan American. He had just transitioned from 707's to 747's when he took me up to SFO to show me around his new "office". I remember he indicated for me to sit in the right seat, not the left seat. About four years later he retired (age 60!!) and we flew with him on his last flight. SFO - HNL - SFO. The airplane is still around; Pan Am is not.

I love the 747-400. I had the pleasure flying with it last summer, twice. Though the A380-800 is much larger and quieter, nothing beats the feel of being inside a 747-400! I was lucky enough to sit in the J class section where you can see the magnificent engines during sunrise and sunset, I loved every minute of it! Plus the wonderful service from Asiana!

Most non a.netters would recognize the 747, if you'd say you're favorite A/C is the A330, they'd be like "the what?" The 747 is very popular and it will forever be the QUEEN OF THE SKIES!

An Empress is to an Empire is what a Queen is to a Kingdom. An Empress does not 'out-rank' a Queen, but a ruler (or wife of a ruler) of an Empire rather than a Kingdom. So I suppose it's fitting, then, that the A380 is Airbus' 'Empress' whereas the 747 is Boeing's 'Queen'.

However, I really don't think that the A380 will rule the skies the same way a 747 did. I doubt that the entire A380 program will sell as many as the 747.

I like both aircraft but for me if I had a choice to fly on a B747-400 or an A380 the A380 would be my choice , a lovely new A/C with a nice quiet cabin. Its the way to go IMHO.

Couldn't agree more!!

Although I admire the A380 for it's size, economy and comfort, I love the 777 for those big-ass engines, I wish that my future wife has the perfect lines of the A345 and the A318 gives me a cute-ness overload in my humble opinion there is nothing like a 744 taking off!
