Just out of curiosity. I'm flying on Delta in a couple of weeks TPA-MEM-ICT. And I was wondering, if the flight has empty first class seats at the gate at departure time... Is it possible to get those seats without any extra cost? Or not? I've never flown Delta before so i was just curious. Yes, I know that this was a stupid question.

Ill be flying on an A320 out of Tampa, Fl and then a CRJ-100 out of Memphis.

Any help would be appreciated.

In short, no, unless you are a Medallion.

Not at any extra cost.

They will sell them though - it would be $75 on TPA-MEM. You need to be on a Y/B/M/H/Q/K fare though - L/U/T need not bother.

Otherwise, they will be more than glad to give those seats in First to non-revs or fly them empty.

Sorry...ignore the first part.

The second and third paragraphs are correct. You can pay $75 if on the appropriate fare and there are seats. Otherwise they'll give the seats to non-revs or let them go empty.

Free upgrades to non-elites would dilute the integrity of the SkyMiles program immensely.

Well what Delta is saying, is if they have empty F seats available after Medallions have been upgraded, they will make an announcement for those who wish to upgrade for $75 to come up to the podium. However you can't be on a dirt cheap ticket. And if AFTER all of this there are seats left, they go to DL Employees. Yes DLs got awesome benefits.

Oh ok. So at the gate I can pay the $75 upgrade and get those seats if they are empty opposed to paying +$400..

Correct?

If you are on a Y/B/M/H/Q/K fare class, that is correct.

Granted, TPA is a market full of Medallions, and all Medallions (and their companions) are ahead of you on the list - it's pretty rare for them to sell gate upgrades.

I'd say the integrity of the SkyMiles program is already diluted with there new little monetization program, which is taking away the last redeemable part of the program....domestic upgrades...

Wouldnt you?

I believe you have to go to the gate agent, ask for an upgrade, then they're going to take your credit card no. If there's an available seat, then their going to charge $75 to your credit card, if not, your cc no. remains uncharged.

It's a cultural thing.

Delta's begun rolling out a "First Class Monetization" program that is effectively offering UP tickets (to P class/First) for very little over the current coach fares. Being tested across the network it would seem, while at the same time several flights are being zeroed-out for V/X/G/Z buckets (Medallion or SWU/Mileage upgrades respectively)...

Being largely spoken about over on f-talk...

Like it or not, many flights seem to be moving to a gate-only upgrade system vs. the advance T-5/T-3/T-1 program.

So that is what the hell I'm talkin' bout.

Ok, just read that thread.... much ado about very little IMHO. On plenty of airlines it's often a very little difference between an expensive coach fare and the lowest first class fare. And on DL, there have always been flights in the system with plats sitting down the back.

I don't want to get into another huge argument over the value of F-class and the elite upgrades, they pop up on here too frequently. I guess I just don't think that it's the main value of the program, while others obviously find it important. My "other" airline doesn't even offer first class yet still manages to run a good loyalty program, maybe that has something to do with it.

Oh, and I LOVED this remark on the ft thread:
"For those who denigrate those of us up front on UGs, and who boast of their ability to buy FC, I hope your newbie, first time in FC, seatmate tries to drink up his $59 and behaves accordingly."

No, do not go up to the gate agent.

They will advertise it on the screen IF upgrades to F Class are available based on the fare basis you're booked on as DeltAirlines stated.

Then, if you hear an announcement that they are offering upgrades for XX Amount, THEN you go to the gate agent, present your boarding pass and CC and then you will be charged for it if you meet the qualifications

Without really reading this thread, a flippant response to the title is this:

Yes, it's possible to get first class on delta. Buy a seat!

Rob, you have to see which fare class you booked in.

Check this out: http://www.delta.com/components/help/apps/booking/cabin.jsp

If you booked B, M, Y or higher, then you can buy the upgrade at the gate. If you booked one of the lowest fare economy tickets (L, U, T, H, Q, K) -- which you most likely did, as that's what most passengers get -- then you won't be able to.
