BA 744 Service At DFW - Loads?

Hi all,

I've always flown AA and LH to europe mainly due to 100% EQM for AA and UA. I've been thinking about checking out the BA premium economy product on my LHR trip next month since we can now earn 100% AA EQM on BA. Just curious how this flight has been performing on the upgraded equipment? Seems to me that when comparing AA and BA for transatlantic service that lots of AAdicts would be making the switch.

Also considering BA for my DFW-LHR-KBP rather than the usual LH DFW-FRA-KBP.

Pretty cool to get BA 747 service at DFW!

This is a good question, and one that I have been curious about for a while now. I flew in to DFW yesterday afternoon and saw that great 744 parked at Terminal D and thought to myself "how are they making that work?" I've looked at the rough pax figures that dfwairport.com provides but they haven't gone up enough (since the 744 was put on the route) to suggest that the loads have increased a lot with the extra capacity.

Funny, too, that you mention AA FF'ers switching over to BA for transatlantic mileage flights. I gave my folks advice to try BA business class on the 744 instead of AA's product on the 772 on their flight DFW-LHR-MUC in July. I've never flown BA in biz or first but I just assume that their product is going to be better than AA's. Most European carriers' products are better than American carriers' products are from top to bottom.

But I digress. I agree - it's great to see that 744 at DFW, I just hope it sticks around and fills up.

I, too, would like to take BA next time I head over the pond if for no other reason than a change of pace. I know AA's product inside out and am really bored with it...one of the problems with being a OW elite...not a lot of variety from which to choose. Thrilled to finally get the EQMs on BA

I was told that their bookings had increased to the tune of 50%.

Wow, 50% eh? That's fantastic but I wonder if/when the actual pax figures will reflect this.

Either way it is really good to see that bird at DFW. Maybe the new agreement b/w BA and AA and the new 744 service will breathe life in to this route, as it was pretty sketchy just a few years ago.

Well, its only been a few months. It will take some time for the numbers to really reflect it.

If the route was not performing well on the 744 it would have been changed back to a 772 by now. Over the last few months BA has witnessed a increase in booking of the DFW route in F, J and WTP.

Since the ATI was agreed BA has seen a increase in bookings in it's WTP cabin from JFK, BOS, ORD and DFW particularly from AA members.

BA deploy a Hi-J 744 on the DFW route configured 14F/70J/30W/185Y

The WTP option is a differentiator for sure. J product on BA is nice change, especially upstairs. Since you can code share on AA/BA lets the AAdvantage loyal have variety.

For those flyers out of DFW who know airplanes, the 744 would be a nice change too... although there are plenty of people for whom the 777 is still a fresh and special experience. I still know people living in DFW area who don't know aviation say they went to Europe and the plane was so nice -- it was "the 777".

I was on the eastbound innaugural flight of BA's 777 DFW-LGW (Gatick back then). It was the first 777 service to DFW and there was a big ceremony and lots of press. A lot of passengers said they changed their flights to get on the 777 (and spent the flight talking about how much better it was than the DC-10)

Next month the BA and QF 744s will both be at DFW... and in a year or so probably the AA 77W can get a photo alongside them.

Interesting that overall pax figures for BA's DFW flight were flat in 2010 but they've shown rapid growth in the past few months.

In December alone pax figures were up 24% and in January they were up 46%!! The BA flight is drawing way more passengers now than the LH flight, which has always been the best performing European flight (foreign carrier) from DFW.

So I retract my statement earlier about how the figures aren't showing the growth of this route. They definitely are and it's great to see! Keep it up BA!

Think the LH flight has taken a hit as a result of this? They've gone down to 6X from daily...

has KE switched back to a 772 yet?

next flights: jfk-icn, icn-hkg-bkk-cdg, cdg-phl-msp

This summer, but KE is going from 3x weekly to 5x weekly, so its actually a substantial upgrade.

I work in corporate travel in the Dallas market and after all thats been happening in Japan, people are starting to fly KE whenever they can. KE is the Cinderella of DFW and they have done very well here. This upgrade in the summer shows that even further.

QF 744s will both be at DFW.

Can't imagine much of a market at DFW for QF. But I guess there is! I suspect this will be via LAX?

Yes, but it started "taking a hit" when the BA flight was moved from LGW to LHR. It made some smaller European destinations much more accessible. They could be reached through LGW but the layover was so long that only the most die-hard BA fans would have considered it a viable option.

SYD-DFW-BNE-SYD. BNE is mostly a refueling stop (not enough leg in the 744 for non-stop West-bound) but passengers are allowed to book a BNE termination.
O/D traffic isn't the attraction, it's the connections with AA. I don't know how quickly they will be rolled out, but eventually QF plans on adding 13 new destinations in the US and 3 in Mexico to its alliance network via DFW. Of course, they'll also have code-share service to the usual places (ORD, JFK, etc...).

I've got $h*t to do

Yes, unfortunately it seems like the LH flight has taken a bit of a hit due to the upgauge of the BA flight. LH numbers were down a few percentage points last year after steady growth for years. Like I mentioned above, BA's figures actually didn't grow overall last calendar year but shot up quite nicely even in the December-January period.

There is only so much traffic in the DFW area to spread around between BA, LH, KL, and AA but I really hope the LH flights stay strong and the BA flights are allowed to flourish. KL continues to be the question mark but I think it's doing okay for a 5x weekly flight.
