Anyone Been To Faroe Islands?

I've been looking at photographs of this wonderful archipelago for quite a while now, and been thinking about planning a trip in about two years when I graduate.

This is the photograph that blew me away. It is truly out of this world:

I am looking at opinions, personal experiences, etc, anything you might know about the Faroe Islands, positive or negative.

How expensive is the lodging? Is renting a car an wise option? What about communicating in English?

Browsing on the RC website, I found out that the flight from LHR to FAE is actually quite cheap... much cheaper then if I were to travel to, say Greenland (which was my dream destination for quite a while). Living a few hours drive from YUL would make this quite a simple way to reach these beautiful islands.

It's the first time I ask for such an opinion on a.net, and I hope I posted in the right forum.
Regards,
Etienne

There are no direct flights from LHR to FAE. There had previously been a weekend service that routed STN-ABZ-FAE, but not sure whether this is being continued.

My suggestion for getting there would be either to route via Iceland, depending on price. Or book a ticket with Air Canada to route YUL-LHR-ABZ, continuing to Aberdeen on BMI Regional and then booking a seperate ticket with Atlantic Airways from ABZ-FAE.

Flight bookings with RC from LHR route you via CPH with SK which seems like a long way around!

Yes I have been there, it is a very rugged series of islands but the scenery is fantastic. The frozen waterfalls which cascade down the rockfaces are particularly beautiful, and the network of undersea tunnels means almost everywhere is accessible by road.

It is expensive, I recall even a hostel being around £30-40 a night, and food was also pricey. Public transport was excellent given the circumstances; it was possible to reach all towns by bus, and even remote islands by helicopter several times a week. The latter I can highly recommend - I think a single from Vagar to Torshaven was around £17 by air, and I was the only one on the flight. But for total freedom I would definitely suggest you hire a car, it'll give you so much more flexibility. The people were friendly but quite reserved, and aside of scenery, birdwatching, and sightseeing in the few towns there isn't a huge amount otherwise to do... but that's probably enough for a memorable trip.

I flew RKV-FAE-CPH, both flights were around £120 o/w IIRC, but I can't check the first as I never received a confirmation email. I booked the first through Air Iceland's website and the second through FaroeJet, who failed before my trip but were absorbed by Atlantic Airways. Their on board service is excellent, but be aware that if you are sticking to public transport the airport is a long way from the capital, Torshaven, so you need to allow a good hour after the light before you arrive. Buses were times to meet flights when I was there, but I'm not sure about the very late flights.

Hope this helps,

Dan

Thank you Dan, this is exactly the kind of account I was looking for.

I was actually expecting more than that, which is nice.

That's what makes this archipelago so special and inviting. Their road and tunnel network is apparently exceptional.

I'm quite into photography, that says it all

My bad, I meant STN. I just re-checked to make sure I wasn't dreaming, and there is indeed a direct flight from STN-FAE (says 0 stop(s), departure 12:00 arrival 14:15). It looks like it is seasonal though, I didn't check all options and I'm not that good with airline websites.

Thanks for the suggestions
