Why Do Elite Flyers Bombard The Boarding Lanes?

I am just curious to see your opinions as to why an elite flyer sits down on the red carpet an hour prior to boarding? They get priority boarding anyway, could it be a psychology answer of them having to show everyone they are an Elite Member? Or could it be they don't want to get stuck behind 5 other elites or could they just have nowhere else to go? It seems a bit much to me. Everyone is going to get on the plane eventually and Premiers, Premier, Execs, 1K's, & GS do not have to worry about their carry-ons., boarding would be much smoother and faster if people would not block the boarding doors when it isn't time for them to board.

I believe the elites do that so that they do not get stuck behind the non-elites who start blocking the way the moment an announcement is made to start the boarding process.

I believe the elites do that so that they do not get stuck behind the non-elites who start blocking the way the moment an announcement is made to start the boarding process.

With the addition of priority lanes this isn't as necessary. There are the one or two in every bunch that don't read signs but beyond that nobody is touching the Elites precious priority lane.

I'm not trying to be glib here, but is this really a major problem? If so, where? I have very rarely seen elites sitting on the floor at the gate unless there is an extended delay. I'm not denying it happens, but I sure don't see it where I'm flying very often. I certainly see the phenomena of everybody standing up and crowding around the boarding area shortly before boarding begins, but don't have any reason to believe that there's more elites in the gaggle than others.

It's becoming more and more frequent. Ive seen it at UA ORD/LAX/SFO/DEN/IAD, AA DFW, & DL ATL most frequently. They usually start lining up 30 min-1 hour prior to boarding.

I would suggest that this hits it on the head. I'm UA Premier Elite and I hate having to wade through 120 people who are slated for zones 2-4. Dude... you're not going to board for 15 more minutes and half the people who are going to board before you are stuck behind you and your impromptu wall of people.

I did it this morning on Delta. There was a large line of kettles (non-elites) blocking the boarding area and boarding was imminent, so I made my way through them and waited on the carpet for a couple of minutes until they called for First.

I fly from ATL frequently and a few reasons for this could be:

- Lack of enough seating in the gate areas. In ATL, this is frequently the case for 757's or larger and is an issue on all Concourses. I was thinking the other day how it must have been when DL regularly had L1011 service domestically from ATL! It's funny that when these airports were built, larger planes were more common, but the number of seats in the gate areas were never enough.

- Shortage of overhead bin space. I am guilty of trying to get up close to front of the line for this one! With DL, it shouldn't be a problem for Elite's since they are Zone 2, but I have seen overhead bin space gone by the time Zone 3 is boarding. Even though there isn't a bag fee for checking them in this scenario, having to wait for bags at the other end is a pain if traveling for business and on a tight schedule.

- Knowing the drill at congested airpots. What I mean by this, is if you fly frequently from airports such as ATL, it helps if everyone gets on board quickly and doesn't waste time. Frequent fliers know this and may just help to be ready to go at the usual 30 minutes prior to departure time. If the boarding process causes a delay, that can lead to a delay in getting off on time and the often can mean waiting in a longer line to takeoff.

I don't think 'problem' is really the correct word for the situation, but I can back up the OP and say it definitely happens, and on almost every flight. I can further back up the OP and say that they do, indeed, begin lining up at one hour to sometimes even north of one hour prior.

The worst cases will even have the audacity to set up their laptops, plug in their phones, or even have their lunch at the mini-podiums by the boarding doors at the gates to ensure their place in line. Others will just simply stand there, literally doing nothing, for the entire 60 minute period.

Personally I just chuckle and shake my head, how some people feel they need recognition and validation of complete and perfect strangers by standing in the red carpet line so ridiculously far in advance.

Most carriers allow elite flyers to board at their leisure so if they miss the F class boarding they can still go in their dedicated line. Most Y PAX do not go on the red carpets (or whatever colour based on the carrier) because the Gate Agent will bark at them...

I also am guilty of this, but depending on the aircraft type and the destination/time of year/time of flight. Some business flights I take are notorious for having the first class cabin overheads filled well before all the first class pax are seated, so those flights I'm usually standing in the elite boarding line 15-20 minutes prior. If a widebody, I'm just on the plane early enough to not have my seat given away.

It also depend on the design of the overhead bin. Some of the newer CO B738's have the larger bins and just about every roll-a-board is able to fit in wheels out rather than having to go in sideways. The CO 900ER's have the larger bins so if I'm on one of them I'm not as concerned about the overheads filling rapidly.

Funny, I have not ever thought about that, but I'm sure the person who just has to be first on the airplane and rushes to do so have that very thing on their minds.

Sadly I think this does have a lot to do with it. In another instance, I can't stand the TSA lane signs for "casual" and "family" and then, they had to do it... "expert!" Of course, everybody wants to be an expert!!! So let's all ignore the diagrams which clearly indicate that that line is supposed to be for those who are by themselves and only carrying one piece of stuff and can therefore move quickly.

Back to topic... I've only done this on full flights when non-elites are also bombarding the line, not for any sort of validation but because I flew a ridiculous amount to earn that status so dammit I WILL get my relatively small bag in an overhead before they fill up.

Ever think it is because they want to go home? A lot of the elites are on the road many days at a time and just want to get boarded lay back, maybe take a quick nap, and go home. I know thats why my stepfather does it.

For airlines that have a separate lane I find it hilarious that elites stand in line for anything but more than a couple of minutes before boarding. I too have seen those who position laptops on tensa barrier holder things and carry on like they're sitting in the airline lounge...and for anywhere up to an HOUR before boarding.

The whole point of the lanes is so elites and premium passengers can board whenever without having to stand in line, and can use that time more effectively or more comfortably. Standing in the lane or on the carpet really kind of defeats that!

I put it down to ego...

Reason number one why I completely close off the area of the podium, boarding door, and elite lane at my gate with barriers

I can't stand them either, because nobody enforces anything. I see families with strollers going down the "casual" lane, while a guy with a briefcase and in a suit heads for the "family" lane.

Thank goodness I get to use the lane marked "Employees".

I love the ones that plug in right in front of a door: because they always get ripped out of the socket when I open it and step out.

As for the mini-podiums: I always tell them to move somewhere else. That's a restricted area during the boarding process.

I much prefer to show my elitist importance by waiting either inside a members-and-guests-only lounge or an overpriced coffee bar and then heading to the gate when boarding has begun, gently shoving lower-life forms waiting their turn to board out of my way to the bright red carpet, banging the ones too slow to move with my carry-on.

Except I do that mostly on CO, wrong carpet color, but oh well.

Or to put it another way, I've got more relaxing things to do than stand around to be the first on the aircraft, and not enough brain cells to understand the motives of the ones who do, but I make sure I board early enough so that if we leave late, it isn't my fault...

This being said, it goes both ways. I do get my share of dirty looks when I use the elite line to bypass the boarding queue.I have been called out on it twice. Never replied, and one of two hecklers took it on the gate agent for not sending me to the back of the line. I figure, sometimes it is better to stay quiet and move on...

They want all the coach fliers to see their faces as they board and make their way through the gauntlet. There is always that clown that thinks he's the most important person on the plane and is yelling into his phone before all boarding has been completed. I get upgrades all the time for work and am always one of the last to board. No sweat for me needing space overhead to store a single laptop bag.

I agree that overhead space can be precious, especially if you don't wanna gate check your stuff (unless its going to be in the jetway in your arrival city- which even then can cause you to miss a conx).
Furthermore, why does everyone stand up as soon as the seatbelt sign goes off after pulling into the gate? Where are they gonna go? If you have aisle access, I suppose you can move about some. Besides, nobody is getting off the aircraft in the next 5 minutes anyway, needing the jetway in place and all or waiting for the crew to give the ok to deplane down the stairs (regionals).

Even worse why are people running to the door even when the aircraft just has arrived at the gate. Needless 5-10 minutes waiting before the doors actually open... Maybe people should become a little bit more relaxed about traveling. Personally I found traveling more relaxed now I decided not to rush to get into the plane (I'm most of the time someone who boards when the entire queue is gone), and wait until the door is actually open (and part of the queue is gone) before I decide to deplane. Doesn't cost too much time.
