I have over 150k miles (non-elite now) with continental and I'd like to use these for upgrades on the transatlantic legs of a trip to Istanbul, Turkey. The trip would be for the last 2 weeks of august or there abouts.
I've looked at various options and am only able to find an upgrade on an EWR to FRA leg of the journey. What sort of things should I be looking for apart from different dates? Is it worth hunting through all of the other star alliance carriers? Can I use my miles with them? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

yes try out different Star Alliance partners like TK, LX or LH. Also I remember that you can also combine tickets. I.e. fly with CO to say ZRH and then connect to LX or fly to FRA or MUC and then to IST on TK or LH.
However for that you probably have to call them to check if there is any availability.

Quoting LAXintl (Reply 4): Why dont you just get a business award on Turkish Airlines? They will be operating 2x daily for the summer from JFK.
They have a good product, and cant beat the convienent nonstop service.
I flew TK in Y a few years ago. Great airline. Service was great. Food was pretty good. Can't imagine how nice it would have been up in J class. If I go back to Turkey, it will be hard for me to choose DL (an airline I have Elite Status with) over TK because my experience with TK was that good.
If you're dead-set on using EWR, look into EWR-ORD-IST, since AFAIK, TK also serves ORD from IST.
