For the past few months or so I've regularly heard gate agents at CVG making announcements for flights departing to LAS, LAX, PHX...etc. that they will be beverage only flights with just a snack/peanuts-type service and advise people to go buy something to bring on the plane. I understand that catering errors or short turns can result in the aircraft not being catered sufficiently, but this is a regular occurance/announcement I've heard almost every time I'm near these boarding DL flights (which is often since I work at the airport).
My question is what gives? These are 4+ hour flights that are supposed to have sandwhiches and BOB type offerings, why is DL skimping on the inflight service? Or am I misunderstanding the announcement and they're really just trying to say there will be no free food? Even if the latter were the case, why would they encourage people to bring on food and hurt potential BOB sales?

More than likely, this depends on what time of the day the flight is at, as they do not serve the entire EATS B.O.B. food on flights that depart after 8 PM. The CVG-LAX flights are at times in which the full EATS menu is supposed to be available, so why the gate agents making such an announcement seems downright odd since Delta.com shows that both flights have "food for sale" in coach. The morning CVG-LAS flight is also a flight that is listed as having "food for sale" in coach while the evening flight doesn't, as it departs after the 8 pm cutoff and only offers the EATS all day snacks.

Ah I see, that would be why then, most of the times I've heard the announcements were for the transcons departing around 8:30 or so. I find it strange that DL would not serve their full BOB menu on these long East-West flights though as I would think that would be when they would get most of their sales. Most food places in airports seem to close around 8-830 leaving DL's BOB as the only choice for decent food.

I guess their thinking is that most folks would have already had dinner before then, either before getting to the airport or at the airport before they got on the flight. The snack boxes are offered all-day and are quite filling. I usually eat before I get on a flight anyway and since DL started offering the snack boxes, I've typically gone for those over the sandwiches as you can put what you didn't eat into your carry-on bag for later and not have to worry about keeping it cold (not all hotels have vending machines in them, and if you have a craving late at night, you don't have to go downstairs to the sundries shop for an overpriced candy bar).
