AA Vs. BA Across The Atlantic

Having just flown on BA 297 in premium economy from LHR to ORD, I do not understand why there will not be greater defection of status fliers from AA to BA. The new 777 interior on BA offers incredible IFE with over 100 options and very comfortable seats in both WT and WT+. Add to that free beverages and the experience appears to be much better at relatively the same price. Now that miles can be earned on BA over the Atlantic does AA have any plans to improve their cabins or service? Or re introduce alcoholic beverages at no cost? I flew in business earlier in the year and the lie flat is also ahead of AA's business class. Interestingly - the four people around me boarding the plane (who sat in business) all had AA elite tags on their bags. (I am sure there were others as well)

There will be. Im had the option to fly AA to HEL in August. BA's business fare was only $500 more than AA's, so I went for it. I wont be flying AA over the water in the future unless Im going to CDG, FRA, or MAD (which are the nonstops from my home airport).

Here at DFW, BA's trans Atlantic traffic went up 42% once ATI went in. A lot of people are running like crazy to BA. The service is simply much better.

Let's see how this pans out, mayber AA could become the domestic arm of BA or take over the lower yield routes that BA does not want to fly.

Time will tell.

Since both companies share the revenues, I don't see what's wrong with offering different prices for different products. In the end, both companies would seemingly benefit equally due to the revenue sharing.

On a separate note, I would imagine that this same problem exists with the TATL ATIs in other alliances - specifically, Star Alliance (i.e. UA vs. LH). If so, then how has this issue been dealt with there?

It does. It doesn't matter if somebody flies AA or BA or IB - the profit (or losses) are shared.

AA will begin rolling out a new trans-Atlantic product across all cabins with 77W deliveries, and reliable sources indicate that a Y+ product is being studied.

It's possible ATI gives even less incentive for AA to compete with BA on service standards. I do hope the gap is narrowed, however. On the other hand, AA often compares favorably to Iberia, IMO.

Well I was checking airfares from ATL to LHR on 12/1/11 returning 12/8/11. The BA nonstop was $419 each way, while the AA option was $399 each way (connection in ORD). Not a big difference there - especially considering BA is nonstop.

I checked the same dates from JFK to LHR being that both AA and BA fly the route nonstop.
BA was $360 outgoing and $359 returning.
AA was $306 each way.

So it appears that perhaps BA is already getting a little bit of a premium....... But I'm not sure it will matter much, as they share the revenue now anyway.

That's exactly what I would do. While you can always count on cheap airfare, the benefits just aren't as good as BA's.

I'm off to SAN from DUB in three weeks. I had the choice of AA or BA both being non direct. AA through ORD or BA through LHR. I was going to pay an extra €150 to fly with BA. In the end CO came in about €500 cheaper than BA so i went with them, but BA almost had it in the bag....

I am fairly committed to OneWorld and I pay more AND accept a short layover at LHR to take BA over AA from CDG to NYC. No contest and I sleep like a baby in Club World, so why pay the same or more for a direct flight with little or no sleep and mediocre service?

Im with you. I have to go to Paris in October and Im taking BA. There is a nonstop flight from DFW, but Ill gladly take the layover at LHR. I dont mind AA's 777's (I would take a nonstop on them vs. a connection at LHR) but the 767's royally suck.

In fact, I have noticed similar discrepancies when looking at various itineraries. But the problem is that what you and I observed could either be isolated incidents or they could be due to different fare buckets being available on the AA and BA flights. What I was suggesting is that if the two companies notice higher demand for BA (all else equal), then they would intentionally price the BA flights a bit higher for the same fare buckets and that this would be perfectly fine since the revenues would be shared by the two parties anyway.

Because AA is a safer airline. All the FA's primary role in AA is your safety

Let's not forget the lounges. BA lounges -- especially the new ones in T5 -- are a totally different league, both in terms of design and F&B offering. Most important, there is none of the nickel-and-diming that I frankly find quite insulting in Stateside Admirals Clubs.
