Hey,
I have 10 hours to kill at JNB, during daylight hours mainly...is there anything I can do to pass the time? I hear the city can be a dangerous place but there must be some nice areas? After 7 hours I can get into a lounge, but still - 7 hours is still too long to do nothing!!

If you rent a car for the day there's plenty to see and do- from £22 for the day. Soccer City stadium, Gold Reef City theme park, Apartheid Museum. Visit to Pretoria for Union Buildings, zoo, Voortrekker Monument. If you prefer the train, the current line goes only to Sandton, where there are shops, Nelson Mandela Square. From July the 2nd Gautrain line opens connecting Johannesburg central, Sandton to Pretoria.
It's not as bad as some people say, just avoid the city centre (Hillbrow). Although I wouldn't venture to far from the airport, driving there for the first time can get a bit confusing and it's a BIG city.
There are plenty of nice areas, especially in the northern suburbs, but are difficult to get to/around without a car. Whilst the Gautrain is fine, using the Metrorail trains is best avoided.

Not a good idea. We drive on the same side of the road as the UK but's that where the similarity ends.

Thanks for the advice...it seems this is a complex place to spend a short amount of time. My layover has been trimmed to 7 hours now so I guess I'll just stay in the airport, go to the lounge and watch TV or something.
Cheers

You will get tired of that fast. Take the Gautrain to Sandton, it is a 15 minute train ride, there is a huge mall there, Nelson Mandela Square has nice restaurants, all very safe and a short ride from the airport.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

There is a very good transit hotel in the airport without the need to go thru immigration. I would take a rest there then move on!
