I was curious to see how one would book a flight MIA-LHR using AA miles, but to be able to pick a BA flight, so I went to the AA website and apparently the only flights that show are AA flights (not even BA flights with AA numbers).
I thought the whole point of the JV was so that you could do something like this.

Quoting MAH4546 (Reply 1): You can book it online with an AA code or via phone with a BA code.
OK, where is the special "Book BA flights here on the AA website using your AA miles" section of the AA website?

Could it be that BA are very restrictive about award seats being available? One of my friends has been trying to "spend" her BA miles, but finding seats is a nightmare for her (apparently).

Depends if she is picking a popular route, or the time of year she is picking. There is only a certain number of seats on each flight, so a bank holiday weekend or something is always gunna be busy.

You can certainly book BA awards with AAdvantage points. I've done it going back to the earliest days of OW.
Like everything award capacity is limited and often you need to work around this. In my experience its many times easier to find seats intra Europe due to the number of flights available versus long-hauls being more difficult.

Was there not something in place regarding not being able to redeem AAdvantage miles on BA on routes both airlines operate? Or was it earning miles? Or am I hallucinating? Even if something like that were in place previously, you'd expect the JV would've gotten rid of any restrictions like that.

You're correct - before the JV you couldn't earn or use AA miles on BA, or vice-versa, on some flights - IIRC it applied only to flights between the US and Europe. (And IIRC one city in the UK was exempt from JFK, either Manchester or Birmingham?) You could use AA miles to book other BA flights.

You pick up the phone and call AA reservations.
Partner award bookings are not made online.
