I'm a pro at finding cheap flights, and I'm completely stumped. I don't really care where we go (within Northern Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Southern Germany), how long it takes us to get there, who we fly, or anything, just as long as we're not paying $400 per person, one way! Leaving August 11th. One way.

US$ 215 CAI-LHR on bmi, then take it from there. Plenty of cheap ways to get from LON to anywhere in Europe.

All the things you probably hate about travelling are warm reminders that I'm home

Well, the most Interesting (and a MUST for an aviation enthusiast!) flight will be by low cost airline AIR ARABIA EGYPT-
Unfortunately on Aug 12th 2011, from Cairo to Alexandria City by bus connecting to E5 flight to ISTANBUL SAW for 180USD. From SAW you will have lots and lots of choices to connect to other low-cost airlines, like PEGASUS AIRLINES, SUN EXPRESS, easyjet, Germanwings etc.!
If you can get to Sharm El Sheik (plenty of cheap busses) then Easyjet have flights to LGW and LTN for EUR309.
According to Kayak, Alitalia have CAI-FCO or CAI-MXP for GBP221 ($355)
Also, take Olympic to Athens for GBP110 ($176) and connect from there on Easyjet for GBP79 to MXP ($126)

Thanks for the help guys! I actually did notice that Air Arabia flight to SAW, but I'd feel weird booking it because we're already going to Istanbul, but much later in the trip.
How is Air Arabia? Does anyone have any experience with them?

I was flying the mother airline AIR ARABIA, but not yet AIR ARABIA EGYPT. So far, nothing to complain. You have to pay extra for F&B and baggage, IFE is shown on the main screens- but music channels are not available...
SAW is an outstanding airport and Istanbul a beautiful city- but it deepnds where you wanna go next!
