Well, it shall always frustrate me that I never did get to take Pan Am at any point in my life as an airline fan...sigh.

I have decided to salt that wound by constructing a list of aircraft types that I could have plausibly ridden aboard in this life, but did not.

It's not too long a list, actually: I never rode on a DC-8 (when was the last one withdrawn from scheduled pax service anyway), or a 707 - that one especially hurts because I know Interair in southern Africa was operating a 707 in sched pax service until just about six or seven years ago.

It seems to me that I bloody well ought to have gotten a ride aboard a BAC 1-11 at some point, yet I never did so. Nice going.

For some reason, I have Caravelle on my list as well, except I somehow suspect that there were less ancient aircraft types still plying the skies even when the Caravelle was.

So, let's have a glimpse at your list. The rule is that the missed aircraft type must have been flying in SCHEDULED passenger service during your life as a conscious air traveller, beginning either with a)when you were old enough to pay attention to which aircraft type you were flying on (for me this would be an Eastern Airlines L1011 BOS-MCO in 1979), or if you prefer to be strict with yourself, when you were old enough to start booking your own air travel (for me, that was 1992).

Yep, those two are in my list too.

I also need to add the Tristar (L-1011 if you will). Both of my parents got to fly on one, unfortunately I wasn't travelling with them at the time!

I always wanted to give the Trident a go, having seen them many times at LHR in my youth. And then of course there's the VC10.

I would have liked to have flown a 747SP - I used to think they looked so strange, all kind of stubby!

Finally I would probably say the MD11. I know I could still fly on one with KLM, but I just don't have the funds at the moment! My biggest regret is that I could have flown on one when I flew LGW-ATL-GSO-ATL-LGW back in 2001. Back then DL were still flying them on the LGW-ATL route, but I chose to fly a BA 777 both ways, instead of taking the "mix and match" approach! I still remember the DL MD11 taxiing infront of us at LGW and then seeing that same MD11 on approach to a parallel runway at ATL at the same time as I was landing in my BA 777. Missed opportunity!

HS Trident.
VC10.
Lockheed Tristar.
747SP.
MD11.

The #1 aircraft would have to be the L1011. I'm still not entirely sure why I never got one when I was younger either. My parents lived in the USA during the 1980s (only moving back to the UK just before I was born) and my dad was *very* loyal to Delta the entire time he was there. During the first 10 years of my life we used to go back to America 2-3 times a year but never flew DL. Until 1998 (I think) DL flew the Tristar daily into MAN and yet we always went either BA through LHR and then (after 1995) CO through EWR. Two weeks ago when we were in the USA again after a decade I flew DL for the first time SFO-LAX. It was his first flight on them since he left in 1989 and I asked why we had never flown them at all even though they were at MAN the entire time and certainly a lot more convenient than LHR. He looked into the middle distance for a while and then said he had absolutely no idea why he stopped flying them... sigh.

(If he had remained loyal to DL I would also have got an M11 after they replaced the L1011 into MAN. However I would not have flown on the D10 which was CO's equipment of choice MAN-EWR from 1998 to 2000).

I guess the other two would be the 742 and 727. I've flown on both (BA and US respectively) but during the period 1991-5 in which time I was variously aged between 0 and 4, and subsequently have very little recollection of either. If I'm correct did the USAir 727s circa 1994ish have carpet covered bulkheads with the USAir red and blue logo on in different coloured carpet???? (the background was grey carpet)

I remember flying the BAC111 in 1996 although it was a British World Airways charter to pick of passengers stranded when TAT crews went on strike (we were flying TAT TLS-LGW). I got to fly the 732 on a scheduled flight in 2005 NBO-MBA on KQ, a dream come true since it was always my favourite plane when I was younger!!!

Likewise. I missed flying on pretty much all of the 1st generation jetliners I saw when spotting as a kid. I did make it on board a B732 and a couple of 1-11s though. I've missed a lot of once relatively common aeroplanes.

707 (Iran) and 1-11 (US pleasure flight from Dallas) are still doable this summer for anyone whining that they never flew on them.

The list grows considerably if you want to throw on the Russian aircraft, namely the TU-154 and IL-86/96.

I had flown three times on an Eastern Airlines L-1011 at the age of 10, obviously no reg available so it doesn't count   Still working on that one...

I hope a DC-8 charter materializes soon, and if I had only known that Hewa Bora operated a 727-100 in scheduled services....

It didn't fly that regularly and fortunately you weren't in the crashed flight.... The Ecuadorian Air Force SEEMS to use their 727s including a -100 sometimes on passenger flights. They sell tickets and have a domestic route network, mainly on DHC-6s but sometimes or some routes get the BAe-748, Hercules or 727. Maybe someone can find out more for us.

That is true, and Congo is one of the countries where I probably would have considered twice going there.

I was in UIO two months ago and have deeply investigated the situation with the help of two local contacts, however the outcome was that no more foreigners are allowed on FAE planes. Besides that their sole 727-100 is grounded with an engine failure since early May. The good news is that it will likely remain for another 5 years or so.

There are more operational with the Colombian and Mexican Air Forces, however I have no idea if these operate scheduled flights? Worst case a plane charter could fix the situation, maybe the ex-Trump 721 which is now based in Malaysia is affordable for a group charter.

I had a few chances to fly Concorde in the 1980s and didn't do it. I could kick myself.

Scheduled to fly Delta DC-8 from Jackson MS to DFW in 1985, but they swapped to a B757.

Chalks were making regular flights from South Florida to the Bahamas but a tragic accident shut them down for good.

Looks like the DC-3 is the only shot I got to scratch one off the list.

The Grumman Goose is still operated by PenAir between Alaska's Aleutian islands. It would be quite the trip to get there, but I'm sure it would be worth it. Here's a video: link

Couple of notes for everyone

1) You may not include aircraft that are still operating today in scheduled passenger service...some of you have mentioned 757's and MD-11's; those do not belong on the list. (Also, aren't there 727's still flying sched pax somewhere in the world?)

2) As I type this, the thread has reached 16 replies but only RyanairGuru, kiwiandrew, and RogerThat have successfully sighed. (I said, in the opening post, "Don't forget to sigh about this.")

You just KNOW you've done too much outback/bush flying when even the aviation geeks are hoping it's a F27 rather than a DC3, because it's pressurised and flies higher than the mountains you have to cross, so the peaks are not looking down at you!

Well you mentioned the 707, so it appears rules are definitely there to be broken  


My missed types:

A320-100 - cocked up in not getting that one.
BAC 1-11 - actually flying it on a charter in a couple of weeks 
BAe RJ70 - I didn't think this would disappear so quickly, I don't think there are any firmly scheduled flights left now?
B727-100
B737-100
Caravelle
Concorde - had the chance too, but it would have meant no summer holiday which, as a ten year old, I found more enticing.   
DC-8 - still hoping to get on an F version
F-27 - probably still operating somewhere, but difficult.
HS-748 - Still flying in Canada or not?
Il-62 - maybe there will be another chance, but I doubt it. Had two chances, wish I'd gone with them and blown the cash.
Shorts 360 - or are there any left flying in Alaska/Central America, IIRC the S330 is still in operation in Alaska?

Many more I can't think of right now too.

TAM Bolivia is operating one on regional routes from La Paz. But they interchange with their MA-60s and their staff doesn't have a clue which one it will be.
LADE's F-27s only seem to fly military nowadays (you went to Argentina yourself and found out, right). But I still see pictures of them sometimes so I have hope to get on one next time I'm in Argentina.
Expo in Sri Lanka and Myanmar Airways ceased operating them unfortunately. If anyone knows some other F-27, please let us know.

Shorts 360 should be fairly easy; there is Tiara Air flying between Aruba and Curacao, Pacific Coastal from Vancouver, Air Seychelles, Ayit flying a domestic route within Israel, I forgot the two cities but there was a nice recent tripreport on it. Maybe Islena (TACA connection) domestic in Honduras.
Air Cargo Carriers in Alaska have both the 330 and 360 but I wouldn't count on getting a ride, the US is much more stuck up with things like that then say Canada.
Freedom Air in Guam and Daba Air Nusantara Indonesia operate pax Shorts 330s but not sure if there are scheduled flights left (maybe only charters or VIP).

I've got a few on my list. Given that I can't list every type ever operated (I've only been flying for just under 20 years), I'll just mention a few. I won't bother with all of the subvariants, because I could spend all day listing things like the 727-100, 747-300, 747SP, etc.

Concorde
L-1011
DC-8
707 (though I did get a ride in a KC-135 once, so maybe that counts?)
A300/A310 (I know a few are still flying passengers, but, AFAIK, not in North America, where I tend to do 99% of my flying)
Various Russian airliners

Also, even though it's in service in Europe (and thus not technically allowed on this list), I'm still going to mention the BAe146/Avro RJ. I was once ticketed on a NW/Mesaba ARJ85 on its last flight to MDW (schedule change the next day, no more 85s, whole fleet retired about a year later. However, my inbound flight was an hour late. I ran my ass off across DTW, down the stairs, through the tunnel to the B (?) concourse, only to see the plane sitting there with the jetway pulling back from the boarding door.    Got rebooked on a DC-9 a couple hours later.
