Which do you prefer the 747 or the A340, the 747 was quite a nice aircraf when I flew BA PHX-LHR. However, the A340 wins it for me on looks, it is so sleek and just demands attention, my only dislike is on the A340-300 with such little tiny engines, the a345...now we are talking.....

747 easy. No doubt the most beautiful aircraft ever built (after the Caravelle), and still the fastest commercial airliner. I'll never forget the day I saw a Turkish Air A340-300 fly over my house. I live about 9 miles from ORD, so it's pretty low. I know the altitude makes planes look slow, but I swear, this A340 must have been doing 210 kts tops. 744s fly over my house and the house shakes. Can't beat power and performance baby! And those puny CFM56's on the A343 just look bad....I still can't get over the fact that the same base engine that powers the 737 also powers the A340...

Hmm, tough one. I think the 744 beats out the A342/3 for me. The A345, on the other hand, is almost up there with the 744. The big engines really make it look good, and the fuselage doesn't go on forever like the A346.

The 744 is a great looking aircraft but I love the A346. It is gorgeous with the four engines and being the longest airliner in the world. The 2x4x2 seating configuration IMO is the best config with ever only one seat between you and the aisle.

Hm, from a passenger`s point of view I like the A340 better (2-4-2 vs. 3-4-3 in econ).
Watching the planes doing approaches and take offs I like the 747 more than the A340-2/3.
The A340-600 is at least as impressing to see as a B747, but I don`t know how about an A340-500, never saw one.

The 747 is very impressive, but it looks too "fat" for me, like an "obese aircraft", even it's a bit rude to say that of this legendary aircraft
I like the more aggressive design of the A340 better, specially the 500/600 series with their huge engines. I saw A340-600 air display at Le Bourget in 2001 and have to say that I was greatly impressed by the show !
Here are two pictures that highlight well the distinguished lines of A340:

747 all the way for me as far as apperance goes, I have never flown on the A340 at all so cannot comment on the ride.
As for the comment in response 7 that the 747 is fat what do you think the A380 will look "Fatter " and lets not start an A vs B row over this its just a question okay
thank god i was not born a bird. this type of flying is much better

After recently flying two legs in the 744 and two on the A345, I would take the 744. Although the A345 was the SQ leadership, I still loved and enjoyed the feeling of traveling onboard the giant that the 744 is.

I have flown on a 742 (BA), 744 (BA and VS), 343 (VS) and 346 (VS). I have to say that overall I love the A340 series better than the B747 series. I found the A340 to be a much quieter ride, one that felt much more solid too. The interior of the A340 seemed to be much less affected by the movement of the airframe. Now all that said, the A346 I flew on was a very new and extremely well designed aircraft. I am sure that if I flew on a brand new 747 it would even the comparison for me a little.
I found the ride in the A340 to be much quieter than the B747 (no comments on the A340's engines please ).
I also love that mean downward sloping stance of the A340.

For me its the A340-6 I wouldn't mind the 2/3s though. The 744 looks too fat and looks like my disgusting neighbor. The A340 now looks very Professtional and sleek and just attracts your attention no matter what. When I see the 744( w/e variant) it doesn't look very presentable the upper deck really turned me off and he the nose( from the nose cone to where the wing starts) is hideous. The 744 is definitely a impressive aircraft but its just not one of the most addictive aircrafts out there IMO.

Most people, young and old that know nothing about commercial aircraft can usually tell a 747 from any other aircraft. Even my kids (which have no intrest in aircraft) can tell a 747 when they see the hump. 747s are universal.
