First: I am an experienced traveler and know what I am doing
Second: I am worried about the things I can not control
I am booking a flight on Delta for Friday September 16th DSM-ATL-CAE
Delta is offering me the first flight of the morning from DSM to ATL, with a 35 minute connection time in ATL.
I have done this flight before... But, in the winter schedule the flight doesn't leave DSM until 6:00am, (leaves at 5:45 or 5:50am summer time) so I had about 10 more minutes to make the connection and it was a RUN to get to the flight.
Chances I make this connection if I book it (the fliglht and running my butt through ATL)?
Trying to get into CAE as soon as possible to see the girl friend...

Have you monitored for a couple of days which concourses these flights are using ?
35 minutes is doable at ATL even if having to switch concourses, but a relaxed connection would require some more minutes.
Carpe diem ! Life is too short to waste your time ! Keep in mind, that today is the first day of the rest of your life !

Looking at the schedules, you probably ought to opt for the second ATL-CAE flight so the connection is not so close and it gives you a little breathing room in case your DSM-ATL flight is delayed into ATL for some reason. While a 35 minute connection is doable at ATL, if you've got to go more than two concourses, it's going to be close, and you'd have to hit the train exactly right and not have to stand around a few minutes for the next train.

Be prepared - That's the boy scout's marching song!
35 minutes sounds way too close to me. I've never attempted that tight a connection before (seeing as I'd have checked bags that need to transfer, etc), but be prepared! Anything could happen, including a flight delay coming into ATL which could cause you to miss your connection entirely. I wouldn't take any chances, if I were you.
