So ill be visiting Madrid for 3.5 days and 4 nights at the beginning of October, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what to do there. Unfortunately i couldn't swing a longer trip, (connections from LAX on non US carriers arrive late in the day unfortunately)   . I was planing to visit all the standard sights, such as the Prado, Royal Palace, and Reina Sofia Art Museum, as well as explore the Plaza Mayor and Puerta de Sol areas. Ill be staying close to Puerta de Sol, so this should all be easy...

My question is about nightlife and Tapas..i got a Rick Steves guidebook, but some of his suggestions don't really seam that great, i was wondering, does any one know of some good tapas bar in the center of Madrid? Any suggestions?

Also, would i have time to do a trip to Toledo? Kinda picked some bad days apparently fri, sat, sun and mon, but i have been told Toledo is really worth it. I was also curios about Avila or Segovia, but I'm not sure i can swing that...which would be better? Segovia and Avila,or Toledo? Im a big history buff, so i know the whole area has a huge amount of historical sights to visit.

I would appreciate any suggestions on nightlife, tapas, and other attractions that may be interesting. i speak Spanish(thankfully) so language shouldn't be an issue, but this is my first trip to MAD.

Thanks in advance

Toledo is fabulous, & less than an hr from Madrid Atoche station, I think it cost €30 return but the trains are comfortable & air conditioned. We were there for about 4-5 hrs I think. There's a torture museum in Toledo, which was cheap & interesting! We didn't have much time there, but even walking around the beautiful streets is an experience. It's a very hilly town, but check out the local bus service, there's a bus which goes to the main square, Zocodover & up to the main look out point over the town & the Tagus river.

North of the Gran Via is the Chueca district, popular among the gay community but welcoming to anybody. There are plenty of bars and cafés. If you are at all interested in soccer (football) a visit to the Real Madrid Stadium is one suggestion.

Toledo is well worth a visit and I personally would rate it above Ávila, despite the latter's well-preserved city walls and Cathedral with cloisters. Segovia has an impressive aqueduct that dates back to Roman times, several interesting churches, an splendid Cathedral and the Alcazar ( royal castle) houses a museum dedicated to the Artillery Academy.

As I visited each with a tour group I can not advise you on how best to get to Ávila and Segovia, but they are served by decent motorways. If you are only going to be in Madrid for 3.5 days you probably won't have time to see all three so my recommendation would be Toledo. While there, don't forget to see El Greco's "Burial of the Count of Orgaz" in the church of Santo Tomé. El Greco not only managed to feature his son in the painting but also himself.

Enjoy your stay!
