The Boeing House Livery, Successful Or Not?

When the first digital renderings of the 7E7 was published by Boeing in 2003, they came with a new Boeing House Livery. That livery was then applied to the first 777LR, 787 and some 737:s and 747:s (with the exeption of the vertical stabilizer in the latter two cases).

But then some changes occured. The first 747-8F and four of the six test 787:s were all painted in a very simplified version of the house livery, probably in order to save time and money on the delayed and exceedingly expensive projects. Then, due to marketing attention needs, the first 747-8I was presented with a bright orange red version of the livery, same pattern but different colors. And lastly, the 737MAX was revealed sporting a blue-gray toned livery.

Today, I'm not really sure of what the Boeing house livery actually is. We've seen at least four different versions in the last five years. Is it the latest presented version (i.e. the blue-gray shown on the 737MAX) that is the official livery now? Or does each plane type has it's own "house livery"? If that's the case, what is the official colors of the 767 and the 777? And finally, is it really a good idea to have such a complex house livery that you don't have time to put it on the planes? What's your thoughts?

Well, there have certainly been many variations on the general theme. In any event, as long as it says "Boeing" on the side, I suppose it doesn't matter much that the livery isn't exactly the same. They'll suit it to whatever their needs are, as they have done with the recent incarnations.

Agreed. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming they only paint their aircraft so that they don't send them around the world in that "lime green" unpainted get-up. I doubt that they're trying to secure more sales based on how they paint their aircraft!

I would disagree, look is very important to the general customer. For example, when the A380 did its first tour to Australia (and I am sure it was like this in many other parts of the world) thousands flocked to see it. If it has shown up all white, wouldnt have been to good and the A380 wouldnt have that 'aura' that surrounds it to the general public today. Same with the 787 etc, when they go to airshows etc, it is good to have the aircraft looking good. Sure it might not secure sales on the spot, but it will play a psychological role for sure.

When the general public calls most civil airliners a "jumbo jet", I doubt they really care. A few thousand people watching the A380 has not created the 'aura' that you speak of. In my opinion, the 'aura' is due to the news reports saying it is a flying hotel, has pools, bars, etc because they go by the Airbus sales pitch.

Further, the general public doesn't have much say in the purchases an airline makes. I could write a letter to my favorite airline and petition them to buy the 787, but they wouldn't listen. Airbus and Boeing market to the airlines, not to the consumers. The airlines know how the plane is said to perform, know what it will look like in their livery, and I bet could care less about how the plane looks when it rolls out. Airbus and Boeing painting planes in house liveries is just icing on the cake.
