UA used to have a web site listing the routes featuring the new business class, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Am I blind, or has it been discontinued for some reason?

If so, any way to find out which routes do have the new business seats?

I've actually been looking over this lately as I shortly plan to book a C trip WAS-HKG for next month. I found UA's site to be a bit lacking in terms of all the details of the C seats, especially compared to the websites of other carriers where you see a full diagram of the seat and can click on each feature.

The one drawback I see in UA's new C offering is the config is 2-4-2 (so 8 abreast total) compared to 1-2-1 on CX and AC. I haven't seen UA's new C seat in person and it's hard to tell from their website, but that just seems like a lot less room compared to other carriers for around the same price.

Not sure what the layout is like on CX but I know it is angled on AC, so a direct comparison of #seats/row is not really valid. And while you are correct that the UA seat is narrow compared to some, you also have to remember that it's full-flat, not the angled lie-flat, which is a huge plus in my book.

There's a lot to be desired with UA... their international Y-class sucks, their domestic network has a ton of bottom-tier regional feed, etc... but their international J-class is hardly a bad value proposition.

It's hard to compare because CX and AC use herringbone seating, unlike UA. Pitch and width is about the same (I think UA is slightly wider than AC even), but because herringbone seats are angled, the longitudinal distance between seats is much smaller, so while you have less seats per row, you have more rows for the same amount of floor space.

I do prefer herringbone seats (AC A330 is my favorite TATL crossing), but I think UA's new business class is a very good product. I just wish I knew where it is (and more importantly isn't) available.

I think even if a specific route is listed you may still get the old BC, as I did on a DXB-IAD-DXB trip last month. I upgraded in both directions and had the old on the DXB-IAD leg and the new on the return. And I will admit, even though the new seats are narrower they are lie-flat as a previous poster mentioned, and even though it is eight across it did not feel cramped at all. I felt more cramped in the seven across (although I was in a middle seat), and the seat was much more suited for sleep than the old version.

But I will admit, I had an aisle seat right behind the FC bulkhead so this may not have been an issue.

Is UA's Biz product getting better? Absolutely, but they still have a ways to go IMHO before they can compare with their European and Asian counterparts.

Believe me there is plenty of room and thats coming from a guy who is 6ft and not skinny either! The only thing really missing is storage, pretty much everything has to go in the over head locker.

For what its worth, I much prefer this kind of configeration that a herringbone. If I travel with someone, I can converse with them in J on UA or similar layout. On a herringbone, forget it unless you want to shout across the aisle all flight.

On BA, I can see the advantage having a forward and back seats side by side to maximize width of the seat at the shoulders and less width at the feet when the seat is completely flat, but I cant see the logic with the United layout as each row is either all facing forward or all facing backwards?

What is reason behind this?

The seat narrows at the foot area, and if you'll notice the seats are at a slight angle. So they are employing a similar concept as BA, just with opposing rows instead of alternating seats in the same row.

When they went from recliners to the new full-flat seats this configuration allowed them to do it without a major reduction in the total number of seats. (45 to 40 on the 772 IIRC)

The guy who wrote this is an a.net favorite, a prolific TR writer, and quite simply one of the most discerning premium-class travelers you will encounter on this site. He uses a weighted-average formula that is explained at the end of all his reports, and rates the new UA-J very highly.

I actually read that in 2009 and again recently. He was flying a 747 aircraft where the 2-4-2 is less cramped, but on a 777 there is much less room making the seats 19 inch width. Anyone flown on a 777 with the new business class? The UA website says they haven't updated very many 777. I can't imagine how anyone would find a 19 inch business class seat comfortable especially to sleep.

According to the United website the seat width of the new business seats on a 747 is 23.5 ", where the seat width of the new business seats on a 777 is 19 ". So they aren't really the same seat, the 747 has 4.5 inches more width.

Back when United had the old recliner seats in business class they had the same amount across on both the 747 and 777 (2-3-2). I distinctly remember the website stating the 777's business seats were about an inch or two narrower than the 747 business seats. I remember flying on a 747 and 777 in business class almost in succession and the 777 did feel narrower, although I did not measure the seat width. It would be interesting to see if this is the case still.

I'm not sure my liking old recliner seats has anything to do with this discussion. I was just wondering as I was surprised to see the 2-4-2 in the 777. Just like I'm always surprised when airlines decide to do 3-4-3 seating in economy on 777's. Lots of airlines like Etihad say the aisles are just narrower but something has to change to fit another seat in a considerably narrower aircraft.
