Hello everybody,
I am finally back after some years of pause from the airliners.net world. I was looking for the cheapest way to get to Iceland and back to Italy around the 1st or 2nd week of october for about a week. In a few hours of web surfing i couldnt come up with anything remotely affordable to my pockets, given also that Iceland isnt exactly a cheap country to stay even just a week.

If this wasn't so soon but more like 3 of 4 months down the road, you'd get a good fare on Germanwings. But in 3 weeks, good luck. Icelandair has great fares to go to the US (especially student-only fares) but if you want to go to Iceland only, they're expensive.

All the things you probably hate about travelling are warm reminders that I'm home

Ok if you use Cimber Sterling ( https://www.cimber.com/booking/) for the Rome to Copenhagen portion, and then use Iceland Express (http://www.icelandexpress.com/booking/price_calendar/). You can maybe get a fare for under 400 USD. Depending on dates and your flexibility.

Using Soren's example, how about a "day trip" to the Usa, with a 7 day stopover en route?
Or, how much is the ferry from Denmark? Or Iceland Express from London or Glasgow, with a Ryanair flight from Italy?
Hehe I like out of the box thinkers. I'd do whatever turns out to be cheaper, my week can also be of 10 days, and the ferry from denmark sounds wicked. I saw also Iceland Express have some interesting fares from London.
If you have any other information you would like to share without spending too much of your time it'd be great.

Actually the cheapest way is routing through Oslo as a return Oslo- Reykjavik is only 127 USD, and you can most likely find a relatively cheap flight to Oslo. Not sure if the connections line up though, but Oslo is definetly the place you want to fly to as its the cheapest round trip to Reykjavik.

Have you checked SK via OSL? Sometimes they have really good fares (SK 4788 flies 6x weekly, not on Sundays if I remember correctly) If you don't mind about delays and bad service, you can take Iceland Express. But notice that Express had only 33,4% on-time last year, and Jan-Jun 2011 the average delay was 98 minutes, compared to 3.6 minutes at FI. But they have pretty good fares sometimes tho! You can even try to connect in Belfast or EDI on FR and 5W. But remember that FI has about 100% better service then 5W. Also, I once found a 150 € round trip (!) on Atlantic from CPH to RKV via Vagar. But that very rarely happens!

Just looked, it runs once per week from Hirtshals on a Saturday. Cost is EUR122 each way, for a berth in a couchette cabin. It arrives on Tuesday so that includes 3 nights accommodation, and it looks like you get a few hours in Torshavn en route. http://www.smyrilline.com

Pricing this comes to about GBP679 departing from London. So a nice idea, but more expensive

Quoting JoeCattoli (Reply 16): I will give this option very careful consideration man, it's not only quite cheap
Don't forget the need to get to the port in Denmark, and the bus from the port in Iceland (Seydisfudor (sp?)) to Rekjavik.
This link: http://www.seat61.com/Iceland.htm
has a bit more detail on getting to the port, and also advises against pre-booking meals, and for paying in DKK rather than EUR.
I'm sure it will be an experience, and also to build into a complete trip with flights in the other direction

Transavia was fairly cheap in July/August, from ORY, but they are also gone for the rest of the year...

To all the friends that helped me so far:
Unfortunately I broke a finger of the right hand playin soccer with friends, so I have at least to postpone my plans for 10 days or so until I'll discover if I need surgery or not. But I'm quite positive that I'll visit Iceland before the end of the year, so your time has not been wasted anyway, will let you know.

Get well! I've broke a finger 3 times playing soccer, know the feeling... Once I had to delay a trip to Florida by 2 weeks and another time I missed the finals in the Icelandic Cup with my team (KR)
